Jefferies Culture - is it that bad?

Hi can anyone weigh in on how the Jefferies culture actually is? I've heard and read everywhere how bad of a sweatshop it is. Can anyone weigh in on this as far as what group/hours look like as well as comp? Thanks!

Jefferies' culture is often described as a "work-hard, play-hard" environment with a strong "fratty" vibe at the junior level. Here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

Work Environment

  • Sweatshop Reputation: Jefferies is known for being "sweaty," meaning long hours and intense workloads. This stems from the need to generate revenues comparable to bulge brackets (BBs) with fewer bankers, which requires more effort at every level.
  • Junior Experience: While the hours can be grueling (80-100+ hours per week in some groups), juniors often gain significant exposure and responsibility. This includes deal reps, modeling experience, and "playing up" in terms of responsibilities.
  • Group Dynamics: Culture varies by group. Some groups are described as having good team dynamics and supportive seniors, while others can be more cutthroat and demanding.

Compensation

  • Jefferies offers competitive pay, often at or above street level, depending on the role. They also provide perks like WFH dinner stipends and even handed out Peloton bikes in the past.
  • Bonus clawbacks are a concern at higher levels (associate and above), particularly with unvested RSUs that are forfeited if you leave the firm.

Overall Culture

  • Junior Level: Generally described as more relaxed and extroverted compared to BBs. Juniors are often close-knit and supportive of each other.
  • Senior Level: The senior culture can be tougher, with high expectations and a demanding environment.
  • Growth Challenges: The firm's rapid growth in senior headcount without a proportional increase in junior staff has exacerbated the workload.

In summary, Jefferies can be a challenging place to work, but it offers excellent deal flow, significant responsibility, and strong professional growth opportunities. The experience largely depends on the group you join and your ability to handle the demanding hours.

I have not worked there but am an incoming intern and have asked many current and former people this question. Seems like the firm has some of the bigger cultural differences between groups among banks. Healthcare, energy are probably as bad as advertised and contribute to the overall reputation, while others sound pretty similar to any other group at any other bank. Again I haven't actually worked there yet so if someone else has listen to them over me
