Jefferies Energy Group Interview Help

Hi,

I have a first round with Jefferies for their energy group for SA 2024 position in a week so kinda stressin. Aside from general industry knowledge, what are some common technicals they ask that I should know. Also, how does their recruitment process work after a first round?

Thanks!

Not Jefferies or IB but I can answer this since I'm in O&G. Energy is its own beast and unlike anything else you will find as far as modeling goes. I doubt they will ask crazy energy technicals for SA but here some things to keep in mind:

Energy is a Texas club and your interviewers will have most likely grew up in Texas and went to Texas targets. If you don't have that background, you better have a really good answer on why you want to do energy in Texas.

Know how O&G is broken out vertical wise. Upstream/Midstream/Downstream/Services. How are these different from each other and how does each generate revenue. Also know all of the major basins in the U.S and what energy profile they are comprised of (permian, eagle ford, Fayetteville, Bakken, DJ, etc.)

You need to have a decent understanding of the global macroeconomic implications of O&G. What is OPEC? What are the top countries in OPEC (or name them all)? What happens to the economy when oil prices are low or high? Take that knowledge and apply it to other industries. How would oil prices affect Disney's revenue?

Know energy specific multiples (EBITDAX) and the general capital structure of energy companies. Why isn't there any LBO activity in energy? What is an NAV and why do they use it?

Hope this helps

Not in Jefferies, but went through the process somewhat successfully (declined super day). What I can say about Jefferies Energy is that they’ll ask somewhat on-steroids technical questions, so be prepared to do mental math well. Also know Jefferies recent deals and be ready to get grilled about the rational of the deal. Have great answers for why energy, why texas, and why Jefferies. Other than that ur set
