Jefferies vs Greenhill London

Hello - have received 2023 SA offers from both firms in their London office. Jefferies is considerably larger and on a growth trajectory, but probably cannot shake off the reputation of being an MM (although the average EMEA deal-size appears to be in line with Roths/Laz). Also hear comp is very good, and their office is in a nice part of the City (albeit they share their building with RBC).

Greenhill is arguably the "least" of the EBs - but is a generalist internship. However, probably patchier dealflow - not to mention the firm is lossmaking with no intentions for expansion.

Greenhill converted very few of their summer analysts last year, their deal flow is weak and they have a declining reputation (check their share price). Jefferies, on the other hand, as you mention, has strong deal flow/size. As far as EB vs. MM goes - I wouldn't class Greenhill as an "EB" anymore - especially when comparing it to the likes of Lazard/PJT/Rothschild; it simply does not compare. Sure, Jefferies is a "MM" bank... but it has stronger deal flow and a strong reputation.

Personally, I think that Jefferies is a much better shop, and I would take this over Greenhill. Hope this helps!

Think it’s hard to go too wrong with either here

GHL has struggled with recent results but London has some top MDs across Digital infra (as other poster noted), Consumer (strong ex UBS MDs), HC (ex Head of BAML HC) and UK plc in particular (ex Chairman of Barclays). It’s much smaller so even with a few deals in the UK office it is strong on a per head basis

I’ve friends at both places who’ve had a good amount of deal flow, important to consider culture and the team you’ll be working with as ultimately that would be the biggest deciding factor. GHL clearly a much smaller place than JEF and so less well known in the UK. Both would have good exit opps if that’s what you ended up looking for.

Would go to Jef. Greenhill has a weaker deal flow, little international staff. Did the SA super day and culture felt very old fashion. They gave us packed sandwiches at lunch, like wtf

Went against the grain and decided to choose Greenhill - thought I'd outline my reasoning:

  • Only a 6-week program, so can do 2x Summers in '23.
  • M&A and RX generalist.
  • Liked their "old school" banking vibe and their offices on Berkeley Sq

I can't really see myself joining them for FT - but I think the first two points offer the greatest optionality in applying for FT and Off-Cycles.

Hey can you PM me pls- I would like to ask a few questions and would appreciate your help.

Friend has an AC coming up, did you have one already? Thought they hadn't started yet
