Job hunting after an offer

I currently have a full time offer (converted via summer analyst position) at a decent bank. Needless to say I'm trying to get a better offer from the top tier ones, I'll be joining next year so I have some time for job hunting.

I have been messaging people on LinkedIn and meeting with some I met through mutual acquaintances. I am highly worried that some of the higher up people I've met would know the VP at the bank I got the offer from. I don't what kind of impact it would have if they maybe asked them something along the lines of "This guy has your intern on his CV, would like to ask how his performance was". Idk if they do this kind of talk, but I'm really worried. I don't think they can legally take back the offer because it is already submitted to my college and all the official work has been done (or can they?). Would there be any significant negative impact if these people got talking?

If you just put it under the pretense of networking it's fine, but if word got to your VP that you might be looking for other jobs, i.e. looking to renege, they could very well rescind your offer anytime.

I get it. You probably want to be a have a yellow brick road to PE, but chill.

This is a dumb idea for 2 big reasons:

1) Getting a full time gig in IB out of school is hard/bordering on impossible

  • Most of these places over hire interns to fully lock down their analyst class before August is over. It is now the end of September.

  • Hiring is cooling off to prep for a slow down. All in, you are structurally disadvantaged.

2) If you start recruiting/indicating you want to go somewhere else, you're inviting the risk of your bank rescinding your offer. I'm sure you know, but Finance, especially IB, is a small world.

You can still network with these people, but don't recruit. After 6-12 months at your shop and you some actual deals, reach out again. And, even if people find out, you will probably be of some kind of value/may be owed severance and 1000% more difficult to dump than an intern.

Enjoy your senior year.
