Jobs After Banking
Out of curiosity, does anyone in Banking really like their job? I have been working in a top group at a BB firm for nearly a year now, but I can't say I really enjoy the work or feel that I am gaining much from it to become a better investor.
I am not trying to sound soft, but I don't understand the enamor in this career path IB --> PE -->Climbing the ranks.. We just had mid-year reviews, and I was ranked very well, but I don't see where the true skill comes into this job, just effort and attitude. I have secured a spot at a renowned UMM firm, but I worry I will face the same issue of working 85+ hours a week on dumb sh**.
Anyways, I am asking if anyone has dared to step out of the conventional Top BB firm -->solid PE job route and did something where they felt they had more skin in the game and risk regarding their decisions (and are happy with this decision). 99% of the time, I am working on models or decks that nobody even really looks at besides my own team, it drives me crazy, and I feel that the efforts are worthless. What comp-driven routes have any of you people taken or your friends that you truly enjoyed? I really feel like PE is not it if I want to have a life, and especially have a chance at a larger reward that isn't a guaranteed $320k after working 90 hours a week. No money, to me, is worth mindless grinding and a terribly unhealthy life.

But to your point of not gaining skills, one thing you need to realize is that you are growing and learning everyday. I thought I don’t know shit in my job but I had a call with a analyst from a ratings agency the other day regarding some financial statement questions. I was worried i was going to sound like a dumbass considering I was asked to do this and had no idea what to talk about but I was surprised by how well I was able to carry the conversation and even the analyst noticed
So long story short man, you are growing without you actually knowing it.
Yes I like my job.
