JPM - How to Get Out of 5 Days in Office per Week

Hi everyone - my wife works at JPM in a front office but non investment banking role in NYC. We have a young child and my wife is really struggling with being back in the office 5 days per week.

Is there any way at all to convince JPM / an employer to let you work remotely 1-2 days per week? I suppose it would be tough for them to make an exception for one employee, as then the others would want an exception too.

Is there any way to convince JPM for an exception due to being a working mom with a young (~1 year old kid)? Is JPM quietly allowing any exceptions for certain types of employees (despite Jamie Dimon being very vocal that everyone is back in office)?

If not, are there any things you can do to try to make work life better? Like come in a bit later, leave a bit earlier, try to get a workout in during the day at the company's gym, etc.? Or on Fridays, come in at 9am but then leave at lunch time, pretend to have a doctor's appointment and then work from home later, etc.?

This sounds ridiculous but could you get a doctor's / therapist's note saying you need 1 day per week work from home? I'm trying to think outside the box here.

People will probably say the best thing to do is find another job that has a more flexible WFH policy which is probably the right answer. At the same time, it's time consuming to find a job and not the easiest when one has to be in the office 5 days per week.

Thank you in advance!

yeah honestly a little sad for the non banking folks being forced to office 5d per week.

we’ve been 5d in person in IBD for a while but it’s just so unnecessary and everyone would hugely benefit mentally from WFH fridays lol

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies and insights for navigating JPM's strict return-to-office (RTO) policy:

  1. Leverage Personal Circumstances Thoughtfully:

    • While Jamie Dimon has been vocal about the importance of in-office work, exceptions might be possible for specific personal situations. Your wife could consider discussing her challenges as a working mom with HR or her manager. Framing it as a way to maintain productivity and balance rather than a complaint might help.
    • A doctor's or therapist's note could potentially support her case, especially if it highlights the mental or physical health benefits of a hybrid schedule.
  2. Explore Quiet Flexibility:

    • Some employees at JPM have reportedly found ways to adjust their schedules subtly. For example:
      • Coming in later or leaving earlier on certain days.
      • Taking longer lunch breaks to fit in personal errands or workouts.
      • Working from home for part of the day under the guise of appointments or other commitments.
    • While these approaches might not be officially sanctioned, they could help alleviate the strain without drawing too much attention.
  3. Consider Internal Networking:

    • Your wife could connect with colleagues in similar roles to see if anyone has successfully negotiated a hybrid arrangement. Learning from their experiences might provide actionable insights or even a precedent to reference.
  4. Long-Term Solutions:

    • If JPM remains inflexible, exploring roles at other firms with more accommodating WFH policies might be the best option. Many boutique firms or roles outside of traditional banking are increasingly offering hybrid or fully remote setups, as highlighted in WSO threads.
  5. Maximizing In-Office Time:

    • To make the current situation more manageable, your wife could:
      • Utilize JPM's gym or other amenities to break up the day.
      • Schedule personal tasks (e.g., grocery delivery, childcare coordination) during downtime to free up evenings and weekends.
      • Build a support network within the office to share tips and strategies for balancing work and personal life.

While finding a new job might be the ultimate solution, these steps could help improve her current situation in the meantime.
