JPM Internal Lateral?
Graduated in May and currently in a finance-related role. I'm currently in the process for multiple JPMorgan positions—AM, PB, WM, and CB—but none are in IB, which is my ultimate goal. Depending on the offer, I’ll try to optimize it to make the IB transition easier.
From my conversations, it seems they expect a 2-year commitment before allowing internal moves [which I am fine with]. But can I lateral internally earlier if I network and build relationships? I’ve already made solid connections in top IB groups (M&A, M&C, Tech, FIG, HC, etc.), and I plan to expand further.
If my long-term goal is PE, how feasible is a non-IB role (2 years) → top IB group (M&A/HC) → UMM/MF PE? Could I do the internal move before the 2-year mark? And could there be any potential blowback from attempting an internal move?
From the conversation I had with people who have done this and others in LinkedIn, it looks like those who took this route stayed until VP/ED+. I know a lot of them, who I spoke with, said they enjoyed it and want to stay on as long as they can, but why didn't they leave? Or is it harder if I take this path, to exit to PE?
Double bump
Probably pretty hard dude. I would suggest jp in a diff location
Do you mean in nyc? Because some are there while the rest are split between Chi/LA/hou
It will be hard for you to be viewed the same as elite university direct to IB for PE recruiting as HH and PE professionals are highly anchored to prestige
Yeah I was wondering the same because I thought it was odd that everyone I could find who did this path ended up staying- I am not judging being a D/VP at JPM is not easy and get comped well. But thanks for clarity, if I don’t have to worry about exits than I can honestly just focusing on breaking into the best group in terms of culture/fit/comps and focus on that
tryna do the same move, based on info from networking, some PE firms care and some don't, imo you should also be open to some MM firms to improve your odds landing PE. its market dependent, i saw one do MS non-IB 2 yrs > MS IB 2 yrs > MF PE but it was when hiring market was stronger
Yeah, not ruling MM out and know it's more doable. I just wanted to see how my odds were for UMM because that would be the sweet spot I am interested in.
Very difficult and a top group would be even harder. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but UMM/MF are very picky about backgrounds to the point where even doing detours decrease your odds significantly. Also I saw your comment about not "ruling out" MM - keep in mind that would still be a big stretch as your odds of lateraling into IB are just that low.
Also depends on your group. AM > CB > PB/WM for lateraling into IB.
Yep, agree, not easy, and PE firms do care a lot about prestige. Doing an MBA might be easier, but to add another data point, I have 3 VPs in my group who i know that have done this, and they came from PB/WM/AM and some other random BS back-office team. So, I assume there is a pipeline/internal program which you might be able to leverage, and networking probably helps. No clue if that will help with PE.
Hmm interesting. Tbh there might be periods where switches like that are easier. The main issue for this guy will be the PE part of that's his end goal
Assuming you’re at JPM? But could you confirm? Also are you in New York or a regional office. Definitely interested in this
