JPM SA Offer - Please Evaluate

I got an offer today to be a summer analyst in JPM's Tax Exempt Capital Markets Group. Its 70K prorated with 2,000 relocation stipend. Seems like a pretty good gig. Only thing I am afraid of is the position will pigeonhole me in either Public Finance or Capital Markets. Will I be an attractive candidate at Bank's IBD departments come FT recruiting in fall or will I be at a disadvantage? Also how will this look to consulting firms? How are hours/prestige/potential to learn?

Thanks!

JPM is fairly well known in the MM space, especially west coast (if you plan on working west coast, this provides name recognition).

As long as you have good work experiences, you won't be pigeonholed (especially at the SA/full time level- you really don't get pigeonholed until you begin FT). Do you have any offers/interviews coming up? Did JPM offer an exploding deadline? Can you possibly do other interviews coming up before the offer expires? Weigh these considerations before making your final choice.

Nope, I have until March and still have some other interviews so that's definately what I'll do. Just wanted to know roughly where I stood. Thanks for the insight - that's good to hear. Anybody else have anything?

Stop bellyaching. Take the job, work your ass off so you will be noticed, don't be a pain and you will have your pick of the next assignments.

JPM's Tax Exempt Capital Markets group is pretty well known, had a friend who did SA gig there got an FT offer but turned it down for law school. He enjoyed his time there and the hours aren't as bad as IBD. You will definitely not be pigeonholed, relatively for entry level and SA you will be doing mostly the same type of work the modeling and stuff, and you will be going through the same training which is worthwhile.

I agree that TECM will pigeonhole you for FT. However, at JPM, the summers can apply for positions in other groups and even other divisions. As long as you do a good job in your group and are a semi-normal person you should be able to switch groups. Honestly, I wished I interned there because they worked way less than I did. I’d say they usually got in around 8:30 and rarely left after 11:30 while not coming in that much on the weekends. The prestige is definitely worse if you are worried about that. Other interns, who don’t matter at all, will look down at it; but you’ll be working less and have more time to enjoy yourself. The work isn’t similar at all don’t listen to the person above. Nothing about the job is similar. They don't do DCF, accretion/dilution models any of that. They do training with the rest of IB though. I had a good friend work in the group so I’m very familiar with it. I’d talk to her about her work and I’d have no clue at all what she was saying. Also, for some odd reason all the interns except one last year were female. PM if you have more questions.
