Laptop Suggestion for Boutique IB?

Hi everyone,

I managed to secure an IB internship at a local boutique this upcoming fall. I was instructed to bring a PC for my start date in a couple of weeks.

I am in the market for a new PC that I'll use only for my internship and school-related tasks. Any suggestions? Preferably under $600.

Thanks.

$600 might seem like a tight budget for a nice laptop, but I definitely think you can find something to suit your needs if you are reasonable with your expectations. Here are a few suggestions for what to look for:

  • You'll probably want 8GB of RAM; anything more than that will likely be outside of your budget range.
  • Portability is nice, so 13" is the sweet-spot for screen size.
  • You'll need a halfway-decent CPU for moderate-to-complex Excel work, probably at around 2.00 GHz or better. I would suggest Intel i5 to fit your budget (AMD's desktop CPUs are great value, but their laptop processors aren't quite caught up to Intel).
  • A solid state drive (SSD) will make a world of a difference for start-up time and loading applications. 256GB should be plenty, plus very reasonably priced right now.

Here are a few things to NOT worry about: * I wouldn't expect you to be gaming or editing videos on a $600 laptop, so don't worry about the GPU at all. * CD drive: completely irrelevant and useless today * 2-in-1 design and/or touch-screen: not that useful IMO, but seems to be very common nowadays

With all that in mind, here are a few models I found on Best Buy:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pavilion-x360-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-la…</a">HP Pavilion x360

  • Pros: i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, touch screen/2-in-1 design (again, not that useful IMO), fits budget right at $600
  • Cons: CPU is pretty slow at 1.6 GHz, 128GB SSD is a little small, a little heavy at 3.5 lbs

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-lap…</a">Dell Inspiron * Pros: i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD is great, touch screen/2-in-1 design (again, not that useful IMO), fits budget right at $600, a bit lighter than the HP at 3.2 lbs * Cons: CPU is also only 1.6 GHz

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-laptop-intel-c…</a">ASUS 2-in-1 ... literally the exact same specs as the HP, just different brand

Out of these three, I think the Dell is the clear winner just because of the extra storage. BUT... if you are willing to take the risk, you could look into getting a refurbished unit of a better model for a significant discount. I'll let you do the research on whether you think it is worth it.

Hope this helps!

PS: Don't even think about getting a Mac. They are absolute dog-shit for anything finance-related.

I really appreciate this thank you so much! I really appreciate your breakdown as to what would work best given my role. I also really appreciate specific PC's I can look into. I may shell out an extra amount of cash for better CPU if needed.

I was asked to bring in a laptop for my first day and figured it was best to go on the market for a newer one specifically for my internship and school. MD explicitly mentioned no Mac's lol

Thank you so much!

id just mention that 15.6" arent actually that much bigger than 13" in RL and the weight difference is usually negligible. You'll most likely be getting external monitors and will be in the office all the time but if working from home at some point and just in general for uni after, i think 15.6" is probably better idea. go to some brick and motors shop and compare sizes side by side. usually you can also get more bang for back in 15.6"

budget work laptops not my speciality but Dell Inspiron 15 3000/5000 after e-coupon discount are lke 650/700 and look ok. plus rmb u probably can get student discounts at some shops?

Great response. I just wanted to add that, in my opinion, i think there is much of a difference between 15.6" and 13" in RL. I've had both and I could see the huge difference.
