Lateral/Fall Recruiting

Currently IB SA at boutique in NYC, wondering how I can lateral to larger (thinking MM) for post grad. Any information would be helpful. I'm a non-target 3.8 gpa. Only reason I got this gig is through networking. Wondering how I should approach other than just networking (which I'm doing to the best of my ability) as well as how difficult the interview process is for FT rather than SA.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and strategies for lateraling from a boutique to a larger MM firm for a post-graduation role:

Strategies for Lateraling:

  1. Networking:

    • Continue leveraging your network. Reach out to alumni, industry professionals, and anyone you have connected with during your SA stint. Networking remains a crucial part of the process.
  2. Timing:

    • Lateral positions often become available towards the end of June/beginning of July after bonuses have been paid out. Keep an eye on job postings during this period.
  3. Application Process:

    • Apply to as many relevant positions as possible. Even if you are at a “no-name” boutique, the skills you have gathered are highly transferable. Highlight your experience and the skills you have developed.
  4. Interview Preparation:

    • The interview process for FT roles can be more challenging than for SA positions. Focus on:
      • Technical Skills: Ensure you are well-versed in financial modeling, valuation techniques, and other technical aspects.
      • Behavioral Questions: Be prepared to discuss your experiences, why you want to move to a larger firm, and how your current role has prepared you for this transition.
      • Fit: Since lateral hires are often considered for specific groups, demonstrating a good fit with the team and the firm’s culture is crucial.
  5. Highlighting Your Experience:

    • Emphasize any relevant experience you have gained during your SA stint. If you have been involved in significant deals or projects, make sure to highlight these in your resume and during interviews.
  6. Persistence:

    • The process can be competitive, so persistence is key. Keep applying, networking, and preparing for interviews.

Additional Tips:

  • Leverage WSO Resources: Utilize the WSO IB Interview Course and other resources available on WSO to prepare for interviews and improve your technical skills.
  • Consider Different Paths: If you do not secure a position immediately, consider working at a boutique or a smaller firm for a few years and then lateraling to a larger firm. This can also be a viable path to eventually breaking into a larger MM or BB firm.

By following these strategies and continuing to network effectively, you can increase your chances of successfully lateraling to a larger MM firm post-graduation. Good luck!
