Lateraling Always a Bridge Burner?

A handful of analysts at my boutique have lateraled to MM, EB, BB, etc. over the years and I’m always surprised at the distain shown by seniors afterwards. This isn’t the vibe for buyside or industry exits, so I get that it’s about losing someone to a competitor. Not to mention they’ll need someone fresh on their deals. However, these are the people you worked ur tail off for day-in-day-out; is there a way to do this right and maintain the relationships you’ve made longer-term?

At boutiques it's harder to leave because, depending on the size of course, relationships tend to be stickier. I worked at a large BB and when I moved people cheered me. However, during my 1st year, my roommate (at a tiny 20-person boutique) left his firm and his MD kept calling afterwards. The MD even spoke to me a few times to try to convince him to go back. It was awkward.

Shouldn't be. We had a guy leave for a BB because he wanted better PE exit options and he recruited quietly, and when one of our most senior guys found out he was like "He should have just told me! I could have gotten him the job easily!"
