Leader intern of top tier country- AMA about recruitment

I recently finished my leadership term this summer at a G7 country (US/UK/Somalia) and was able to get a return offer. Went to a non HYPSM / Wharton T10. Won’t specify exact country / school because my class was very small but happy to answer any other questions!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice related to recruitment and return offers:

  1. No SA Return Offer - What to Do?

    • If you didn't receive a return offer, it's crucial to stay proactive. Network aggressively, reach out to alumni, and leverage any connections you have. Consider applying to other firms and be prepared to explain your situation honestly but positively.
  2. Explaining No Return Offer:

    • When explaining why you didn't receive a return offer, focus on the positive aspects of your internship experience. Highlight what you learned and how you've grown. Avoid speaking negatively about the firm or colleagues.
  3. Cultural Fit Issues:

    • If the lack of a return offer was due to cultural fit, reflect on what aspects of the culture didn't align with your values or working style. Use this insight to target firms where you might be a better fit.
  4. Recruiting for SM out of IB (BB M&A):

    • Transitioning from investment banking to strategic management roles can be challenging but feasible. Highlight your analytical skills, deal experience, and ability to work under pressure. Networking and leveraging your IB experience are key.
  5. GSAM Best Groups:

    • If you're considering a role at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM), research the different groups within GSAM to find the best fit for your skills and career goals. Networking with current employees can provide valuable insights.
  6. Late Recruiting:

    • If you're recruiting late in the cycle, it's important to be persistent and flexible. Consider a wider range of firms and roles, and be prepared to explain why you're recruiting late.
  7. Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp:

    • Participating in bootcamps like the Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp can enhance your skills and make you a more competitive candidate. These programs offer intensive training and practical experience.
  8. Mock Interviews and Resume Reviews:

    • Utilize resources like mock interviews and professional resume reviews to refine your application materials and interview skills. These services can provide valuable feedback and help you stand out.
