LevFin lateral Analyst / Associate technical interview - please help!

Hi Monkeys - I have a 30 minute technical interview coming up with two VPs in LevFin and I was hoping to get some advice / insight from people as to what may come up. I am prepped up the 400 Questions level I'd say - what are some other questions I might expect given I am hoping to move at the junior associate / senior analyst level?

Cheers

For a LevFin lateral Analyst/Associate technical interview, you can expect a mix of foundational technical questions and more advanced, role-specific topics. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some areas and questions you should prepare for:

1. Core Technical Topics

  • Leverage Ratios and Credit Metrics: Be ready to calculate and interpret leverage ratios (e.g., Debt/EBITDA, Interest Coverage) and explain their significance in credit analysis.
  • Capital Structure: Understand the hierarchy of debt and equity, and be able to discuss how different instruments (e.g., senior secured loans, mezzanine debt) fit into the capital stack.
  • Covenants: Be prepared to discuss financial covenants (e.g., maintenance vs. incurrence covenants) and their implications for lenders and borrowers.
  • Debt Sizing: Know how to size debt based on cash flow metrics and repayment capacity.

2. Advanced Technicals

  • LBO Modeling: Be ready to walk through an LBO model, focusing on how leverage impacts returns and the key drivers of IRR and MOIC.
  • Credit Analysis: Be prepared to analyze a company's creditworthiness, including assessing EBITDA adjustments, cash flow stability, and industry risks.
  • Debt Instruments: Understand the nuances of different debt instruments (e.g., term loans, revolvers, high-yield bonds) and their pricing mechanisms.
  • Market Trends: Be aware of current trends in the leveraged finance market, such as spreads, default rates, and investor appetite for risk.

3. Scenario-Based Questions

  • Stress Testing: You might be asked how you would stress test a company's financials to assess its ability to service debt under adverse conditions.
  • Restructuring Scenarios: Be ready to discuss how you would approach a distressed situation, including potential restructuring options.
  • Deal Experience: If you have prior deal experience, know your deals cold. Be prepared to discuss the structure, rationale, and outcomes of transactions you've worked on.

4. Behavioral and Fit Questions

  • While the focus is technical, you may also get questions about your interest in LevFin, your ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and how you handle tight deadlines.

5. Preparation Tips

  • Practice Financial Modeling: Ensure you can confidently build and interpret models, especially those related to credit analysis and LBOs.
  • Review the 400 Questions Guide: This is a solid foundation, but supplement it with LevFin-specific topics like covenant analysis and debt structuring.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice answering technical questions concisely and clearly, as time is limited in a 30-minute interview.

Good luck! Crush it like a pro!
