Little/No Work as an Intern

Are there any other summer analysts barely getting work or is this not normal?

Context: SA at a MM firm in a good coverage group but it seems to me they took too many interns because there’s not alot of work to go around the interns (there should only be like half).

Is anyone else experiencing this? What else can I do to get work and have something to speak to in reviews/put on my resume?

Here are the things I’ve done/tried: Coffee chats with everyone in my group from AN up to ASO, expressed capacity and eagerness for more work to each, constantly keeping up with email chains/teams to intercept anything I think I can quickly turn for my deal team, gone through the drive and looked at old materials and rebuilt old deck, sat with analysts while they work and ask questions as they come up.

What else can I do? Any suggestions y’all have for how I can make a lasting impact and not be one of the interns cut due to headcount? All advice appreciated, cheers!

Yes for example: when comments come in for a deck or a model and I think they are easy enough for me to turn over quick, I will say “I can take x comments” and I’ll start working on it. It’s been the only way I’ve been able to get work on this one deal because they just won’t assign me anything if I don’t do that

You’re doing great so far. Try helping with internal tasks, offer support to other groups, and track your contributions. Suggest improvements if you spot any. Staying proactive and reliable will make a strong impression.

Very common, I did very little in my internship until the end then crushed a bigger task at the end. Don’t worry at all most people don’t trust interns for much anyways, just do whatever you have to do and make people happy, very often there’s just nothing to do esp early on
