Looking for a quick advice on next steps

Hi all,

Going to try to be as concise as possible about my situation. I'm looking for advice because I've found myself in a rather unique situation and I am unsure of how to proceed.

I am due to graduate in December 2024, and I have two internships already under my belt. One in a rotational analyst program at a small bank working mostly on the corporate banking side of the business and one at a cre firm.

For the past few months due to current circumstances, I did not think I was going to be able to do another internship due to personal reasons this summer however things have changed and now I am able to work this summer. The only issue is that I gained this ability to work after the recruiting cycle has ended for 99% of banks.

Where do I go from here if I am trying to work as an SA this summer at a bank, but apps are closed. I don't care about the size of the shop, really just looking for more experience as I am approaching 2 years removed from my last banking internship.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hey there,

First off, kudos to you for being proactive and seeking out opportunities even after the traditional recruiting cycle. It's that kind of tenacity that can really set you apart in the finance world.

Now, onto your question. While it's true that most of the larger banks have probably wrapped up their summer analyst recruiting, there are still a few avenues you might consider:

  1. Boutique Banks: These smaller firms often have more flexible recruiting timelines. You might not find a formal application process, but don't let that deter you. Reach out directly, express your interest and your situation. You'd be surprised how often these sorts of initiatives can pay off.

  2. Networking: This is always a good strategy, but especially when you're in a bit of a bind. Reach out to alumni, previous colleagues, or even cold contact people at firms you're interested in. The goal here is to get your name out there and see if anyone knows of any opportunities that might be a good fit.

  3. Alternative Finance Roles: If you're open to it, you might consider looking for internships in related fields like corporate finance or even S&T. These can still provide valuable experience and keep you in the loop for future banking opportunities.

  4. Preparation for Next Year: If all else fails, use this time to prepare for next year's recruiting cycle. Brush up on your interview skills, make sure your resume is top-notch, and continue to network.

Remember, the goal is to keep moving forward, even if it's not in the exact direction you initially planned. Good luck!
