Looking to get back into Finance after 3 years out of the Corporate world

I worked in Corporate Development and Corporate Banking for a total of 4 years but left to go work in my family business and help grow that - which has been successful in its own right, but I did my job and I’m in a position to come back to the corporate world now with some solid real-life knowledge on Real Estate & land development, structuring term sheets, underwriting projects with lenders, operating SMB retail businesses, managing/delegating teams etc. I just turned 29 and basically feel like I’m restarting, and don’t know the lay of the land when it comes to recruiting. Before I would be getting job postings in my Linkedin inbox for lucrative roles every day. Very much dried up since my LinkedIn has been inactive for 2-3 years now and maybe AI software + fake international applicants has messed up cold online portal applications and the recruiting world?

I feel like Corporate/Commercial Banking is a large enough field that I can find someone to take a chance on me. I’m in Atlanta, so there is a pretty good commercial banking scene. Corporate Development & Strategy roles are too far and in between, so I’m not too keen on spending time looking there

Anyone have any other advice in regards to both the recruiting aspect and companies/roles I should look at?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to help you re-enter the finance world effectively:

1. Leverage Your Unique Experience

  • Your time in the family business has given you valuable skills in real estate, land development, underwriting, and team management. Highlight these as differentiators in your resume and during interviews. Many firms value candidates with hands-on, entrepreneurial experience.
  • Tailor your story to show how these skills translate into Corporate/Commercial Banking. For example, emphasize your ability to structure term sheets, manage client relationships, and analyze financials—skills that align well with banking roles.

2. Networking is Key

  • Rebuild Your LinkedIn Presence: Update your profile with your recent experience and start engaging with posts, joining relevant groups, and connecting with professionals in the Atlanta finance scene.
  • Targeted Networking: Reach out to bankers in Atlanta’s commercial banking scene. Use a structured approach:
    • Step A: Ask for an introduction or a quick conversation.
    • Step B: Win them over by asking insightful questions and showcasing your experience.
    • Step C: At the end, inquire about open positions or referrals.
  • Attend local finance events or alumni gatherings to expand your network.

3. Recruiting Strategy

  • Focus on Commercial Banking: Atlanta has a strong commercial banking presence. Look at regional banks, mid-market firms, and even larger institutions with a local footprint.
  • Cold Applications: While online portals may feel less effective, they’re still worth a shot. However, prioritize networking over cold applications.
  • Recruiters: Engage with finance-specific recruiters who specialize in commercial banking roles. They can help bridge the gap and present your profile to hiring managers.

4. Resume and Storytelling

  • Craft a compelling narrative about your career journey. Explain why you left finance, what you achieved in the family business, and why you’re now ready to return.
  • Highlight transferable skills like deal structuring, financial analysis, and leadership. Use metrics to quantify your impact (e.g., “Underwrote $X million in real estate projects” or “Grew SMB revenue by X%”).

5. Consider Alternative Paths

  • If Corporate/Commercial Banking doesn’t yield immediate results, consider roles in Real Estate Finance, SMB Lending, or Corporate Advisory. Your background aligns well with these areas.
  • Explore opportunities in F500 companies or consulting. These roles can serve as a stepping stone back into finance.

6. Stay Persistent

  • The recruiting landscape has changed, but persistence and a strategic approach will pay off. Take time to reflect on what you value most in your next role and use that to guide your search.

By focusing on networking, crafting a strong narrative, and targeting the right roles, you’ll position yourself for a successful return to finance. Good luck!
