Looking to lateral into Leveraged Finance/Sponsors at a BB/EB

Currently an first year analyst at a mid-market bank in the levfin/sponsors group and looking for levfin opportunities at a bigger bank. I would like to be as ready as possible so are there any specific questions that one would be asked in an interview?

Thanks Guys

To prepare for a lateral move into Leveraged Finance/Sponsors at a Bulge Bracket (BB) or Elite Boutique (EB), here are the key areas and questions you should focus on, based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Technical Knowledge

  • Debt Structures: Be well-versed in the characteristics and structure of debt, including senior, junior, mezzanine, and equity.
  • Bond Basics: Understand bonds, yield curves, pricing, and interest rate drivers.
  • Credit Analysis: Be prepared to assess a company's debt capacity and analyze credit metrics.
  • Investment Grade vs. High Yield Bonds: Know the differences and implications for leveraged finance.
  • Debt Schedules/Waterfalls: While less common, you might be asked about these, so review them.
  • Capital Structure Optimization: Be ready to discuss how LevFin helps clients achieve their goals, whether through mergers, acquisitions, or capital injections.

2. Market Knowledge

  • Have an opinion on both fixed income and equity markets.
  • Be familiar with current trends in leveraged finance and sponsor-backed deals.

3. Behavioral Questions

  • Be prepared to explain why you want to move from a mid-market bank to a BB/EB. Highlight the opportunity to work on larger, more complex deals and gain exposure to a broader range of products and clients.
  • Discuss your experience in your current role and how it has prepared you for the challenges of a larger platform.

4. Case Studies

  • You may be asked to walk through a deal you've worked on. Be ready to discuss:
    • Your role in the deal.
    • The structure of the financing.
    • Challenges faced and how you addressed them.
    • The outcome and lessons learned.

5. Soft Skills

  • Communication: Demonstrate your ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly.
  • Teamwork: Share examples of collaboration in high-pressure situations.
  • Problem-Solving: Be ready to discuss how you’ve navigated challenges in past deals.

6. Preparation Tips

  • Review the yield curve and its implications for pricing and structuring debt.
  • Brush up on LBO modeling and how leveraged finance supports private equity transactions.
  • Practice explaining the differences between mid-market and BB/EB deal dynamics.

Good luck with your preparation! If you need more resources, consider exploring WSO's Leveraged Finance Interview Guide or their LBO Modeling Tests for hands-on practice.
