M&A to...Investment Management or HF?

I'm a first year in M&A - well known shop, but nothing crazy prestigious.

I know I'm only a few months in, and might be premature in my thinking, but I find myself less and less interested in M&A/banking more and more.

A large part of it is probably due to a mediocre experience so far - not such great deal flow, little to no technical experience, and more mindless work that I thought (I knew to expect it, just not as much).

I could stick this job out for however many years, if I were that motivated by money/huge bonuses, but the real reason I took this job was because I was genuinely impressed with the amount I learned over the summer (at a different shop).

Now that I'm FT, I find that I'm learning little to nothing, and slightly more miserable each day.

I have always been interested in the markets/stocks, etc, and am wondering how feasible it might be to lateral from an M&A group to an investment management firm/group in a year or so. My offer for this group came very quickly after last summer, and I accepted given a short deadline, and never had the chance to explore options and see what else was out there.

I know this is vague, but I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone has made the switch from banking to a more investment management role.

Thanks in advance
