Major GPA vs. Overall Importance Long-Run
Hey y'all,
I attend a target school and signed for my 2027 IB internship at an MM with a 3.8 at the time of applying - my school's econ/business classes r almost all curved to a 3.0-3.3, whereas electives in other departments are very easy, so my in major GPA is gonna be crap (esp as I go to the upper level electives and kids r smart af so its very hard to get As, but not bad to get Bs), but I can happily pepper in education or socio electives to maintain a 3.6ish CGPA.
I have a couple questions, 1. Is a 3.6 by the end of senior yr (or whenever the GPA background check is) good enough? 2. What month of what year does said background check happen? and 3. Is it ok if my cumulative is solid but my finance GPA is lower (ik this is counterintuitive but still)? Appreciate the clarity.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:
Is a 3.6 by the end of senior year good enough?
A 3.6 cumulative GPA is generally considered solid for most investment banking roles, especially if you’re already signed for an internship. However, keep in mind that GPA can still play a role in buy-side recruiting (e.g., private equity) or if you’re applying to top MBA programs later. A 3.6 might not be a dealbreaker, but aiming for a higher GPA could give you an edge in the long run.
When does the background check happen?
Background checks typically occur after you’ve accepted a full-time offer, which is usually during the fall of your senior year or shortly before your start date. The exact timing can vary by firm, but it’s safe to assume it will happen before you officially begin your role.
Is it okay if your cumulative GPA is solid but your finance GPA is lower?
While a strong cumulative GPA is important, having a lower major GPA (especially in finance or economics) could raise questions during background checks or future recruiting. Firms might not explicitly ask for your major GPA, but if it’s significantly lower, it could be a red flag if they dig deeper. To mitigate this, focus on doing well in your upper-level finance courses and be prepared to explain any discrepancies if asked.
If you’re already signed for an internship, maintaining a 3.6 cumulative GPA should keep you in a good position. Just ensure you’re transparent about your GPA during background checks and avoid any misrepresentation.

I think a 3.5 or 3.6 is fine. I think you’d have to really drop a lot to get in trouble.
what abt 3.1 or 3.2
