Make my way north... advice?

Hi all,

Firstly, let me explain my situation. I am an Australian university student in my second year of a 4.5 year dual degree in Commerce (Major: finance) and Economics (Major: intl' trade and finance). My GPA is 7.0 (4.0 in the US system) and my school is target in the sense that most of the BB (and some not so BB) banks recruit on campus - GS, JPM, MS, ML and DB all do so. Next year (third year) I plan to do a year abroad at either McGill or Edinburgh uni. I am aware that McGill is far superior to Edinburgh but would prefer to be in the UK for reasons listed below. The stint abroad will finish in the middle of the 4th (and hence penultimate) year of my degree - around the time I would be looking to do a summer internship. In addition to this exchange I plan this year to do Summer school at LSE in July. My ultimate goal when I finish my degree is to get an ibanking job in the northern hemisphere, not Australia.

So with all this in mind, I ask for advice regarding three questions:

  1. Are banks willing to give internships to non-nationals? That is, will it be possible for me to do a summer internship in the UK as an international student? I'm not asking how good you think my chances are of success are, but whether banks are open to this at all.

  2. If the answer to the first question is yes, would I be able to apply for a UK internship as an international student whilst not studying in the UK? That is, ideally I would do my exchange at McGill rather than Edinburgh, but do an internship in London at the end of it. Summary: an Australian student studying in Canada but interning in the UK. Red tape aside, is this possible or not?

  3. Lastly, do you think some summer school courses at LSE will genuinely help me or might it just be seen as a resume-buffing gimmick? I guess this question is really: given all of the above, what are my prospects? BB, MM or get my arse back to Australia where I belong (you filthy convict, etc etc)?

Thanks in advance guys,

Eddie
