What would you recommend and why? I am not sure what is seen as more qualified if I were to go into Investment Banking or PE/VC. (I am asking as if these are both from target schools)

Well, you can't do any MBA (much less target) right after undergrad, so that's out of the question. Do you mean 4-6 years down the line?
Are you then planning on doing a MFin and recruiting for Analyst roles? Not sure that carries the same pipeline as undergrad sophomores/juniors.
Your best bet into IB is either through a boutique right now / after a MFin potentially, or a full time MBA program after several solid years of work experience in something related like accounting or FP&A.

I just followed up and saw that I was misinformed. Other schools offer the Master of finance this way but UPenn does not. Back to the drawing board I guess. Either way I am still looking to see which will be more worth while
MFin really depends on the school and recruiting with an MFin really depends on the candidate (how strong your UG was, how you present yourself in terms of culture, smarts, etc). Obviously your geography and your citizenship make a tremendous difference as well, there is no way to accurately advise your situation without that.
The only sure-fire way to know general recruiting strength is to go directly to the source school and discuss with their career center and/or look up graduates on LinkedIn to see what they have done after their MFin. There are probably a few MFin discussion topics somewhere on this board as well - general consensus is it might improve your candidacy somewhat but is not the "reset button" that an MBA could be (although I think that aspect of the MBA is also overblown)
My undergrad is at nontarget. The master of finance program I was looking into was from Georgetown (if I get in) so hopefully that will be strong enough.
USC has a really strong MSF program. kick ass on the gmat and you’ll have no problem breaking into IB. if you really want to leave then Vanderbilt and Villanova have good MSF programs. Georgetown is online so you will have to do a lot of work to network your way in but it has a very strong name brand for IB. good luck
