Based on the most helpful WSO content, typical MD base salaries generally range between $350k and $400k across most banks, including both Bulge Brackets (BBs) and Elite Boutiques (EBs). While $500k might be on the higher end, it’s not unheard of, especially for senior MDs or those in high-performing groups.

Key Points:

  1. Variation Across Banks:

    • BBs and EBs tend to have similar base salary ranges, but EBs might offer more upside in bonuses due to smaller teams and fee splits.
    • Regional differences and the bank's specific structure can also influence base salaries.
  2. Implications of Higher/Lower Base Salaries:

    • Higher Base: Provides more stability, especially in years with lower deal flow or weaker performance. However, it might come with higher expectations for revenue generation.
    • Lower Base: Often offset by higher bonus potential, especially at EBs where bonuses can be all-cash and tied directly to performance.

In general, MDs who fail to meet performance expectations (e.g., generating sufficient revenue) are at risk of being let go, regardless of their base salary.

I think US BBs and EBs are in the $400k range for rank and file MDs then going up to +-$500k for group heads/exec positions within CIB. Coming out of the financial crisis, European banks had a hard bonus cap of 2x base salary so to remain competitive in total comp terms they had to push base salaries significantly above US banks. Think Euro BBs were at something like $800k for middle of the road MDs — at least as of a few years ago. My info maybe dated. Knew a lot of guys who much preferred the higher base. It’s guaranteed and results in a higher proportion of cash in terms of total comp. A lot more confidence in funding your lifestyle at $800k than at $400k and don’t have to worry about a down year
