Med student pivoting to IB Healthcare europe but worried about AI and timeline (2032 start)

Hey guys

i am currently a med student looking to pivot ,my Plan is to grind for a top French MiM (targeting ESSEC/ESCP) and break into  Healthcare IB in BB or EB. i'am fluent in french and english .with the length of med school + MiM, I probably won't hit the desk as an analyst until around 2032.

Two main questions for the forum:
  1. AI risk : Do you think junior execution roles will even exist by then, or will MDs just use AI tools to spin up decks and models?

 2. How well do ESSEC/ESCP actually place in HC teams across Paris/London nowadays. or better target LBS and LSE even with a non finance background and no internships ( no gap year in english schools) ?

Appreciate any insights !

  1. AI Risk in 2032: Based on the most helpful WSO content, the rapid advancements in AI and automation are expected to significantly impact junior roles in investment banking, including Healthcare IB. Many tasks traditionally handled by analysts, such as building models, drafting decks, and collecting data, are already being automated. By 2032, it's plausible that junior execution roles will be heavily reduced or transformed. However, the relational and strategic aspects of IB, which require human judgment and client interaction, are unlikely to be fully replaced. This means that while the nature of the analyst role may evolve, there will still be opportunities for those who can adapt and focus on higher-value tasks.

  2. ESSEC/ESCP Placement in Healthcare IB: ESSEC and ESCP are strong choices for breaking into IB in Europe, particularly in Paris. Both schools have solid reputations and place well in IB roles, including Healthcare teams, especially in Paris. However, for London placements, schools like LBS and LSE tend to have stronger brand recognition and networks, particularly for candidates without a finance background or prior internships. If you're targeting London and can manage the admissions requirements, LBS or LSE might provide better access to top-tier Healthcare IB teams. That said, ESSEC/ESCP can still be viable options, especially if you leverage your bilingual skills and network effectively during your MiM.

Med student + Top 3 Grande école you're generally in for HC IB in Paris or basically any other role.

For London LSE/LBS are top but some EU targets like HEC/ESCP place really well in London too so yes I'd go for it if you want that Paris-London optionality

Not much difference tbh, your experiences are solid. Hec is quite selective lately so the cohort quality is much better imo, and alumni are more willing to help I've seen.

Congrats on the admits!

thank youu !
i'am leaning more toward top 3 because of the gap year ( lSE and LBS are 12 to 16months programs and i don't have a finance background) what do you think ?, especially i want to keep paris as a second option if i changed my mind ( cuz cost of living in london seems to get higher and higher and paris financial hub is getting better).
you cited HEC and ESCP, ESSEC is top too ? or ESCP is slightly better in finance
regarding IA, you think analyst jobs will decrease significantly or they ll just have other responsibilities and roles ? i mean how to manage to not get replaced by IA after all

Yes, LBS/LSE without finance internships already will make it tough to break into London. Top 3 pge/mif is good. Yes ESCP is a bit stronger in finance than Essec, particularly for London since they have a campus there. For APAC Essec is better. Although top 3 + Paris experience will be respected everywhere in EMEA.

Can't comment on IA too much, its as unclear for me as for you. In my shop we're slow to move, just have copilot and been looking into some other tools, nothing crazy.

But its moving quickly, timelines being compressed, you can do more with a handful of brilliant analysts than ever before. But you'd be fine I imagine with the fallback in med :)

Dis moi si t'as d'autres questions !

thank youu so much for the infos !
interesting because ESCP have quite low standards concerning ASTi that's why i was reluctant haha. and i totally agree about the medicine degree as a backup plan .
For Healthcare M&A in EB or BB, is a medicine degree perceived as a real differentiator, or just a "nice to have"? concerning targeting top internships in Europe, what moves the needle the most? Does networking hold the same weight as it does in the US, or is it more about school pedigree gpa and a unique profile?
si ca ne te dérangera pas je peux te poser une question en privé ?

If you're ASTi you can target hec too aha it's super easy to get in especially if you have a "rare" nationality, interesting background story and a solid gmat.

For London there's really only HEC/ESCP and some engineering schools, and you see it in the intern cohorts where I work for instance. But if you build a strong trajectory in Paris, then try for London, it won't matter much

Med school is not needed tbh to be in HC IB. Usually its overkill but if you want to keep that option open then it makes sense.

In france networking is definitely needed. You need a "piston" lol. In London its much less important. GPA doesn't matter. Just maintain a 3.7+ and you're good. For a med student, its not that difficult I imagine.
