Moving locations

I got an offer for Houston JPM (not IB) for 2025 SA. I got the offer and signed a few months ago, but the family I had in htx moved and houston is far from home. I still want to do my intenship but I was wondering if it would be rude to ask if I could switch locations before the internship starts closer to home. my superday wasn't location specific at all (interviewed by people in Indiana and Boston) but I'm not sure.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on switching locations for your internship:

  1. Timing and Approach:

    • It's important to approach this delicately. Since your superday wasn't location-specific, you might have some flexibility.
    • Consider waiting until performance reviews or other key milestones are completed before making your request.
  2. Networking:

    • Network with people in the office you want to move to. This can include VPs, associates, or anyone who can provide insights and support your case.
    • Be personable and express genuine interest in the new location and how it fits within the bank/industry.
  3. HR and Formal Requests:

    • Once you have some internal support, approach HR with your request. Make sure to frame it in a way that highlights mutual benefits for both you and the firm.
    • Ensure that your current team is not blindsided by your request to avoid any potential backlash.
  4. Company Policies:

    • Some firms, like JP Morgan, actively encourage internal mobility. They may prefer you to move during the summer rather than after starting full-time.
    • Check if there are any specific forms or deadlines you need to adhere to for such requests.
  5. Mutual Benefits:

    • Emphasize how the move can be beneficial for the firm. For example, if the new location is targeted for growth or has a harder time attracting talent, this can work in your favor.
  6. Work from Home (WFH) Considerations:

    • If your role allows for WFH or has a flexible location requirement, this can make your request easier to accommodate.
    • Highlight any potential cost savings or efficiencies that could result from your move.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of successfully switching locations for your internship. Good luck!

Generally, the interviews are for a specific group and location. But, regardless, you were accepted by the Houston team, meaning that they filled their position (like how this group in other cities most likely filled positions as well). No harm in asking politely, but I wouldn’t really expect a 'yes' answer. Also, if you end up in Houston, you're only going to be there for a few months anyway, so there’s nothing to worry about.
