MS IBD London Off-cycle Background Check

Hi all,

I accepted an offer for an MS IBD London OC internship, but I have applied with a CV that needs to be updated as at the moment of application I had an internship (local boutique) lined up (no contract but verbal offer) but then it got cancelled due to covid. I definitely didn't get the OC due to this internship as I mentioned it had been cancelled in my first call and have another better (BB/EB) internship on my CV.

Did any of you go through the MS London background check procedure and got to upload an updated CV? Do you know when it usually starts and if you get notified that it's starting? Do you believe I will run into trouble due to this discrepancy?

Thanks

I would highly suggest you obtain some form of letter or written correspondence stating that the internship was canceled from the firm that you were planning on doing it with because you have no contract. The reason why is because the background checks are run by either HR or sometimes a third party and they are usually pretty detailed (just went through one for another bank's off-cycle program in London).

They also could just end up calling the firm that you were planning on interning for to confirm it was canceled, but if there's no paper trail of your planned internship there they could end up calling someone from HR who was unaware of your plans to intern there and can't find any record of you. Generally speaking, having a paper trail just helps make the background check go more smoothly.

Thanks for your message.

Did you not get the chance to give an updated CV? I read that this is usually the case.

Just to add context, the only instance of the cancelled internship is on the actual pdf cv and it's just an "incoming" line. I did not put it in the work experience tab that you compile on the application portal. Maybe they will just refer to that one and not look at my actual cv?

I was given the chance to send an updated CV, however, HR made the point that if there were notable differences between the two documents (such as work experience or education), that those would be flagged to the provider running the background checks.

Also, to my understanding from going through a few of these background checks for different firms, they almost exclusively use the actual resume you provided rather than the application portal information.

For me it depended on where I was interning. I've held IB internships in both Europe and the US, and in the US it's much less in-depth (just work experience + academics). The one background check I had to go through for an internship position in Europe checked everything, even going so far as to call the current board members of student organizations I was involved in 3+ years prior to confirm I actually was on the board in a previous year. But keep in mind anything you list is fair game for them to check.

Get a letter from the company stating exactly WHEN and WHY they cancelled your internship.

If the date of cancellation is after you dropped your application, you'll be fine.

Just get it ASAP, as background checks are run by third-party organisations and who knows if they report it in a nice way or start ringing the alarm bells at MS. They seem to be quite thorough and do not shy away from ringing up any of the names you have on your CV.

Don't be anxious. That's nothing you can get axed for IMO.
