Networking not working!
So I have been trying my best to network as much as possible because I am trying to get an internship, and nothing is working. I email people and schedule a phone call which usually goes well/ok. After I send a thank you note and ask for other people, I can talk to. I don't get an answer-back. It is disheartening because I feel like the conversions went great, but apparently not. I don't know what to do or how to make myself more likable.
I even talked to 3 people from this one bank, and I thought at least I would get invited to a super day, but I didn't. I got rejected, so I have no idea what to do. Any advice? I really don't know what I am doing wrong.
Dont take it too personally. It happens. Thats why you gotta reach out to as many people as possible without being annoying. Just keep pushing through and always ask to be introduced to people who have real influence on the process. Always network with the mindset of expecting absolutely nothing
Are you from a target school with a 3.5+ and relevant internship, or non target with 3.8+ and relevant internship? If not, you’re gonna have a hard time at top firms
if you are you may be making a bad impression, find an older student who has secured the job you want and ask them to do a practice call with you to diagnose
3.5, semi-target, relevant experiences (insight days, virtual internship, fin analyst internship, and IB/ Finance clubs) and diversity
Above is correct, you have to have a top-tier resume - GPA, internships etc. Networking is not enough (especially this year with less people going into tech/startups)
I would ask for people to talk to while you're still on the phone. Definitely have someone a year above you do a mock networking call to critique.
Other than that it's a numbers game. 3 people at one firm is nothing. We had someone talk to like 12 people in my group before we said that's enough... was overkill but he got an offer because he had 12 people pushing for him.
What do you mean by 'at least invited to a superday'? Do you mean invited to a 1R? Like others have said, don't take the fact that they don't refer you too seriously. Bankers are very busy people. With that in mind, if you have had 10+ conversations where you sent a follow-up and you haven't gotten a referral, maybe you are coming off in the wrong way.
Maybe coffee chat an upper year, and if you feel comfortable, ask them at the end if you came across well (and then explain your problem with the lack of referrals as well). That might give you some honest insight.
