Networking Process

I’ve started networking with some people, some through connections and others through cold outreach. This is a question for those who have gone through the networking process or are still in it but have enough experience to speak on it. When you initially meet with someone to get to know them, learn from them, etc. How do you maintain the relationship? I’m wondering after doing coffee chats what to do then, do I reach back out to them at some point? if so, when? Is there a point when you don’t continue networking with them? I sometimes struggle with social things like this so wanted to hear thoughts. Thanks to all who read and/or reply.

Maintaining networking relationships is all about consistency, professionalism, and adding value to the connection. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a structured approach to guide you:

  1. Follow-Up After Initial Meeting:
After your coffee chat or initial meeting, send a thank-you email within 24-48 hours. Mention something specific from your conversation to show you were engaged and appreciative of their time.

  2. Periodic Check-Ins:

    • Reach out every 2-3 months to maintain the relationship.
    • Use these touchpoints to share updates about your progress (e.g., competitions, leadership roles, or relevant achievements).
    • Refer back to topics you discussed previously to keep the connection personal and relevant.
  3. Add Value:

    • Share an article, industry news, or insights that might interest them.
    • If they gave you advice, let them know how you applied it and the results. This demonstrates that you value their input.
  4. Set Up Additional Meetings:

    • If appropriate, ask for another coffee chat or phone call to discuss further insights or advice.
    • Be mindful of their time and ensure your request is purposeful.
  5. Know When to Step Back:

    • If the relationship feels one-sided or if they seem unresponsive after multiple attempts, it’s okay to step back. Focus on connections that are mutually beneficial and engaging.
  6. Professionalism Over Friendship:

    • Remember, these are professional relationships. Keep the focus on career growth, industry trends, and learning opportunities rather than personal matters.
  7. Consistency is Key:

    • Displaying consistency in your follow-ups and interactions is crucial for transitioning short-term connections into long-term professional relationships.

By following these steps, you can effectively maintain and grow your network while respecting the boundaries of professional relationships.
