Networking with non alums?

Hi guys, was curious as to if non-alums have any sway in the recruiting process. Rising sophomore @ a target and worked an internship w/ fairly good connects to the associate and above level at a few BBs. However, these connects are not alums. Would networking with these people have a big sway considering they’re warm introductions/friends of people I worked with or should I prioritize alums?

Networking with non-alums can absolutely have sway in the recruiting process, especially if they are warm introductions or individuals you’ve built genuine connections with during your internship. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Warm Introductions Matter: If these non-alums are associates or above at BBs and you’ve established a good rapport with them, they can still be incredibly influential. Networking isn’t solely about alumni connections; it’s about building relationships with people who can vouch for your skills, fit, and potential. A strong recommendation from someone you’ve worked with or who knows your work ethic can carry significant weight.

  2. Alumni Networks Are Still Valuable: While non-alums can help, alumni connections often have a higher response rate and a natural inclination to assist due to shared experiences. If you’re at a target school, leveraging alumni connections should remain a priority, as they may be more familiar with the recruiting process and can guide you effectively.

  3. Balance Your Efforts: Don’t limit yourself to just alumni or non-alums. Networking across all levels and backgrounds is key. As highlighted in WSO threads, analysts and associates are often heavily involved in recruiting, so maintaining relationships with them—alum or not—can be crucial.

  4. Ask for Referrals: When speaking with non-alums, always end the conversation by asking, “Is there anyone else you recommend I speak to?” This can help you expand your network further, potentially leading to alumni or other influential individuals.

In summary, prioritize alumni connections but don’t underestimate the value of non-alums, especially if they’re warm introductions or people who can advocate for you. A diverse and well-rounded network is your best bet for success.
