Networking/SA question
I'm looking at the alumni database for my undergrad school and there's a section where people sign up that are at the very least willing to give advice (some go so far as to say they'll help you find a summer/full time job). Now, I see like a dozen investment banks with people high up (at least VP for all) so if I networked with them and had a previous investment banking internship would I have a decent shot of getting an interview for summer associate while in a non-target MBA program?
Ok, just so I know where you are coming from, you had a banking internship, then worked elsewhere, then took up an MBA (non-target) and now want to get back into banking. If that is the case, then it should definitely improve your chances of getting an interview, but it may still be tough to move forward in the process only because in this market the banks can be much more selective in who they offer their associate internships and full time positions to. If I were you, I would reach out to several alumni and really cast a wide net - although you don't attend a Target school, and it is a competitive market, having some bankers (especially at the VP level and up) go to bat for you should really improve your chances.
I think you should definitely be able to land a decent number of 1st round interviews, and then it will be on you - I think reaching out will definitely improve your chances of getting that 1st and even potentially help moving to the 2nd rounds. Your biggest task once in the door will be to prove that you are ready to get back into banking, have a plan, and can show not just how your internship, but how your FT position prior to B school has prepared you for an associate position in the field. Think of the alumni as leveling the playing field - you will still have your work cut out for you, but if the alumni offer some help, you will no longer be at a strong disadvantage to those students who are attending Target schools. The last thing to remember is to be patient with the alumni and not immediately go in for the kill (absolutely show an interest, but let the convo develop, since they are alumni see how they made the jump and take it from there - I'm sure you know this, but it's worth repeating).
