Never thought I’d be here

I used to enjoy my education and work. I used to approach it with excitement. I’ve always been an optimist that looked forward to what the future held. Never was one to drag my feet, even when things weren’t going my way.

But man, these days I dread going to work. It’s harder to get myself excited about my career since I don’t see any future at my company. I like my industry, and enjoy the actual day to day (live deal execution, process management, even pitch books), but I just hate my team due to a few bad apples at the AS level.

I already know I need to leave but with a recession looming, it might take longer to lateral than I’d like. Any advice on how to get through this rut? Anybody went through something similar? Nothing worse than a career struggle when your career is 80% of your waking life.

Analyst 1 but here’s my $0.02

1) try and make sure you have a good support system outside of banking so that you don’t rely on work for social interactions and you have people in your life by choice that are actually pleasant to be around

2) easier said than done but start looking at laterals. Market will be quieter but would focus on talking to your peers (assuming you have a couple of close friends at other firms) and try and see what other groups cultures are like based on people you trust/would like to work with and make that your #1 priority when choosing ur next firm

Appreciate the advice! I’ve got close friends that I talk to daily. They’re awesome but don’t always understand the pain lol, since they aren’t in banking.

My friends at other banks don’t have the same problems I have with teammates, but they definitely have their own problems with teammates. Maybe shitty teammates of one kind or another are inevitable. Good call - I’m going to get a very accurate read on culture before joining my next group.

Are you finishing your 1st year or 2nd year and do you want to go to PE/VC? Just curious are you at a BB I'm finishing my 1st year at a MM and pushing my lateral movement to summer 23 to see how the recession plays out along with deal activity before making a move.
