New York Bank Tours This Week

Title; going to New York this week with my school to tour investment banks. Assume there will a presentation and then time afterwards for networking. Will probably be about 50+ of us.

What would people recommend to focus on regarding information and what would be a good approach for networking/positioning ourselves well. I assume with so many kids it would be best to try and talk to 2-3 people with good conversations, introduce ourselves in-person to the bankers we have networked with, and try to learn about "Why firm?" from the presentation.

Anything else to keep in mind?

Got an offer through one of these. Ask good questions/stand out during q&a. In follow up emails mention their answers to your question so they remember who you are and actually respond.

Be prepared... received over a dozen networking calls in December and 11/12 kids are not prepared/just doing the calls to go through the motion.  Spend the entire 30 minutes (if its goes less than 30 I assume you can't hold a conversation (unless I need to leave)) getting to learn about the job, the bank, and the other person.  That means come prepared with decent questions and don't sell yourself, don't talk about yourself unless you are explicitly asked to be the person on the other line- BANKERS LOVE TO TALK ABOUT WHY THEY ARE GREAT.  11/12 calls kids yap about how good they are, their accomplishments, why they might be good at the job.  I'm spending MY 30 minutes to help you, not to learn listen to you.  I am not interviewing you nor am I a decision maker.  I just want to know if you are a decent person that I can pass along to the group that takes care of the interviews.  Most don't understand this.  The less you talk, the better it is.

Honestly, it's hard to stand out. Having been on the other side of these things, I frankly don't remember most people's names. The presentations we give are super generic, so you are unlikely to learn much of substance. And similarly, the answers we give to your questions are likely to be kosher and cookie cutter. There's usually free food and coffee though, just be sure not to spill it on your shirt.
