nicer dudes laid off first .. why?

ok I know this is 100% subjective and I might be slightly biased since I've recently seen quite a bunch of my (ex-)colleagues being let go.

So today, one of the structuring girls on the floor was fired. I don't know the exact reason for the layoff (our firm isn't going through restructuring at the moment), but I assume it was related to some performance issues. I wasn't personally close to her but even from distances I could tell that she was a nice girl. I mean, sharing some cookies she bought in the travel, having a couple minutes of conversations other than saying hi and bye, type of thing.

I don't have sympathy for her since work perspectives can be quite differerent, but it feels somewhat odd that a lot the nicer bunch of dudes that I've known so far are also one of the very first ones to be let go, at least in my firm's case.

My question is, is performance really related to personality? Or were those people just thrown under the bus because they were too nice?

This is a BB S&T story by the way.

Since it's performance-related, nice or mean, she has to be let go. As to if there's any correlation between being nice vs being laid off first, I have no idea. Plus, the concept of "niceness" is very subjective to start with. If she was indeed nice enough that she got the support of people higher up, they would've gone to bat to keep her. Just my $0.02

Your hypothesis is faulty logic postulated on imperfect data collection. What if you only noticed people being fired because they were nice and you had a moment of conversation or connection with them? As opposed to the other people who got fired but you never got to meet because they were "not nice" and never interacted with you?

Money talks. If you don't speak the same language then you are in the wrong place. That's why she was let go.

They don't care if you're naughty or nice, they want someone who gets shit done and that's it.
