Niche Investment category (Infrastructure investing) to Investment Banking

I’m a business student at a Canadian university entering my second year. Most of my internships and extracurricular involvement so far have been concentrated in a niche sector (think B2B VC or infrastructure) so my profile currently looks quite specialized with my internships (except a few startups) being in this niche sector. Although I have completed a few relevant internships, I have had limited exposure to financial modelling, underwriting, or broader transaction work or building an LBO so I am concerned that I won't have "selected project experience: xyz millions of dollar deal" on my resume like some sophmores have.

I have recently become more interested in investment banking and growth equity and have started studying investment banking technicals and networking with professionals. However, I am unsure how to reposition myself as a broader finance candidate rather than someone who is only interested in one industry.

I finished first year with a perfect GPA, but I am not currently involved in any general finance or investing clubs. Given the limited time before recruiting begins, how would you approach second year to maximize the chances of landing a New York investment banking internship for either second-year or third-year summer? My fear is that second year I will have to recruit for this niche sector of infrastructure again and after that I will have to go into that specific sector for 3rd year, and won't be able to generalize into IB.

I would especially appreciate advice on how to broaden my profile, gain credible modelling or deal experience, and avoid being viewed as overly sector-specific. Do they care that your resume shows infrastructure mostly-internships if you are recruiting for IB or a specific facet of IB (tech IB, etc)?

Chill bro your going into second year. Unless you are an American citizen and don't need sponsorship for work start recruiting for IB here in Canada. US firms are more likely to provide sponsorship if you already did a summer in IB at a BB in Canada. Get club experience and start networking with people in the industry. Also recruiting for next summer has already begun and a lot of firms have already filled slots.
