No Modeling Exit Opps
After finally getting the chance to build out an operating model (after 16 months on the desk lol) I am realizing this is not really for me. I really love the quantitative problem solving and data cutting type work but find limited enjoyment in building out financial models. It's not difficult but it's tedious, time consuming, and there's too much false precision involved. I am a naturally hard worker but I can't really see myself building out super complicated models just to entertain someone without any clear value-add or reward. I know VC or GE might have less complicated models so that's definitely an area of interest but I'm curious to hear about other paths as well.
Hi Analyst 2 in IB - Gen, just trying to help:
More suggestions...
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
For VC, just watch out on how analytical the fund is. It won’t be a full LBO, but a reasonable amount of time can still be spent in an operating model if you’re at a more quantitative fund. Though even then it’s probably 20% of the job.
Have you thought about ECM?
Thanks for the response. Good to keep in mind. I was also thinking of strategy & operations at a tech company or something like that. Any suggestions on roles like that? i.e. a role with some data analysis but not in finance. Kinda hard to find something that's a bit off the beaten path of typical finance exits.
It’s a tough move to make because your experience just won’t be relevant for a start-up. My suggestion is to look at earlier stage companies and then you can really shape your own role. Because a company like Wealthsimple would rather hire someone with relevant experience. Though you could always go to WS, work in FP&A and then switch internally!
Building financials is quantitative problem solving lol
I think asset management isn't too modeling-heavy. Some buy side hops too. I highly doubt hedge funds will model every small details, it's mostly about getting the high level details down and going from there. Banks like going into the weeds so they can justify a price/scenario/etc.
I think most places outside of PE and Banks won't model every small thing, just enough to understand a problem, and then decide risk vs reward vs likelihood of issue.
