No one wants a poor sophomore
Basically,
I cold called the shit out of my contacts, linkedin, whatever. I have about 3 calls a day on average for a week next week.
Problem: A lot of them are in non ibanking fields and even they say "we usually take juniors...its great that you are starting early though! Here is a cookie!" (IAMA sophomore btws..) Even smaller shops seem to want juniors.
What do you think I should do to steer these conversations better? Demand to speak with an MD or VP? Currently, I speak with analysts mostly. They like me it seems (no homo) and I have a high GPA.

I got around this problem by saying I have the opportunity to graduate in 2012 if need be. Ramp up online classes take 18 credits etc.
I cannot graduate in 2012, literally impossible. But I like that idea. Almost lying. I feel like I am on the street already!!
Yup, you're screwed. My sophomore year "internship" was earning $9/hour at a clearing firm. Actually I had a really cool boss, but sophomores don't land internships.
Offer to work for minimum wage. Either that or double-major in accounting. The world always needs accounting interns.
I have an internship now, but it is through connex. the river runs dry after this it seems.

How did that work out for you? After your internship, did the remember that you could graduate early if you needed to? Did they allow you to stay an extra year?

Well summer's half way done.. I'd just keep doing what you're doing and revisit when recruiting season rolls around for next year's juniors (i.e. later this fall)

Hit up MM banks in Chicago. I managed to land a soph gig at one, but I'm also a non traditonal background (military). I see other traditional sophs here (not many), but they do exist. Worst case scenario, try and get informational interviews with firms. If you get this far, try and ask to be put in contact with an alumi from your school, so you can hear it from the perspective of someone who is coming from your backround. Don't feel bad if you come up dry, most people dont land a soph gig or so I'm told. Good luck.
I will be a sophomore next year and i live in Chicago. People love talking to me, but don't really like offering. Feel free to PM me with advice if youve been in this situation.

I landed a position as a sophomore (rising junior) at a MM IB. My resume was as a freshman (rising sophomore summer) biotech research, both freshman and sophomore academic years laboratory assistant, GPA was 3.3, so not outstanding, but as a bio major it is more understandable, I had an LOR from a BSD at a BB. I received all of my interviews from cold calls. It is possible, but you need to look at less sexy banks i.e. smaller, Non-NYC, as well as areas where you have a uniquely useful skill set, if you are a tech guru focus on tech boutiques etc. I called a lot of banks, 21 a week is not nearly enough. I called 200-300+ banks, PEs, HFs, VCs and consulting firms. I received all my interviews this way.
21 a week is definitely not enough. I go to school in the midwest, finance major 3.4 GPA. Finally landed a boutique fall gig in NYC. Called over 400+ IBs in NYC.
