No return offer - Next steps

I did not get a return offer from my SA internship at a BB in London. Do I have any chance at succeeding in full-time recruiting. If yes, what should I do? Network, send applications or something else? I do not see a lot of open applications.

Or would it be better to delay my graduation or apply to off-cycle internship.

Any advice would be really appreciated, as I really want to do IB, but I am not sure if it is really realistic now.

If you didn’t receive a return offer from your summer internship, don’t lose hope—there are still viable paths to break into IB. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Full-Time Recruiting

  • Network Aggressively: Reach out to professionals at banks that are still recruiting for full-time roles. Focus on regional boutiques or smaller firms, as they may have openings even after larger banks have closed their processes.
  • Leverage Your Internship: Highlight the skills and experience you gained during your BB internship. Be prepared to address why you didn’t get a return offer and how you’ve learned from the experience.
  • Monitor Openings: Keep an eye on job boards, LinkedIn, and WSO threads for any last-minute openings. Some banks may have unexpected vacancies due to candidates dropping out.

2. Off-Cycle Internships

  • Applying for off-cycle internships is a great way to stay in the game. Many European banks, especially in London, offer off-cycle programs that can lead to full-time roles.
  • Use this opportunity to gain more experience, build your network, and position yourself for a lateral move into a full-time role.

3. Delay Graduation

  • If you’re still in school, delaying graduation could give you another shot at summer internships or full-time recruiting. This is a common strategy for candidates who need more time to strengthen their resumes or network.

4. Alternative Routes

  • Consider applying for roles in related fields like corporate finance, equity research, or consulting. These positions can serve as stepping stones to IB.
  • Pursue a master’s program at a top school (e.g., LSE, LBS, Oxbridge) to re-enter the recruiting pipeline with a stronger profile.

5. Be Realistic and Persistent

  • Breaking into IB after missing a return offer is challenging but not impossible. Success will depend on your ability to network effectively, demonstrate resilience, and adapt your strategy.

Remember, many professionals have faced setbacks and still succeeded in landing IB roles. Stay focused, keep networking, and explore all available options.

Sorry to hear. It’s always tough to land a dream internship and not get the return.

Some steps forward:
- Apply for full time graduate programs (IB, PE, AM, any small firm - you cannot be picky)
- Apply for summer internships / off cycles (easier to get, but you’ll have to convert it this time)
- Apply for a backup masters if you can afford it, great if you land a summer
- Pick your best option of the 3

Full time recruitment is even harder than internship recruitment, but keep going at it.

Thank you for letting me know - I appreciate your help.

I am thinking that I cannot apply to all three options, would it be smarter to apply for an off-cycle? Will they be more forgiving regarding not getting a return offer? Or should I apply for summer internships - will someone even give me another chance?

Extend your graduation to give you 1 more year to recruit. Otherwise do off cycles elsewhere or apply for summers in US BBs (they’re more flexible on early starts).

Don’t elaborate on why you didn’t convert, but focus on what you’ve learnt and what you would do differently this time. Especially if it’s because of cultural fit lol (which shouldn’t even be a thing). Do not shy away from not getting a return - it is ok.

Hi may I ask the feedback they gave you as to why they didn't give you an offer?

OP pls be honest with yourself was it purely because of cultural fit or was that something the staffer said to you to let you down easy.

Seeing far too many "cultural fit rejections" when there is a deeper cause

Once u identified the problem only then can you move and improve
