no sophomore internship
Mostly due to the fact that I had been ignorant of the standard path towards landing an offer for a competitive internship after junior year until recently, I wasn't able to get into anything relevant for this summer (my sophomore year summer) and have ended up doing manual labor for 40+ hours per week in order to earn some cash.
My question is how much of a disadvantage am I at in terms of recruiting for next summer? I have a 3.8 at a semi-target (Vandy, Emory, Notre Dame) and plan on getting more actively involved in financial clubs/organizations next year. I also am studying abroad in Europe if that helps my case at all.
I'm not talking about an IBD internship on Wall Street (which I realize is basically out of the question) but maybe a MM boutique firm or something along those lines. Any advice on what I can do this summer/in the future to improve my chances would be really appreciated. I'll apologize in advance for my lack of specificity--I'm just beginning to seriously consider and weigh my interests in PWM, IB, S&T, etc.
You're absolutely fucked and can't work for anywhere besides Wendy's.
No.. you're fine, most people in your shoes have no idea what the fuck they want to do . It would definitely be hard if you were trying to get a Goldman or MS, but you should be more than fine for MM. I would start trying to think up a story of why investment banking for yourself and try to get in contact with some bankers. Also figure out if you want IBD, S&T, PWM ASAP.
You're fine in terms of recruiting. Your GPA gets you in the running for any BB IB position. I agree with King Dididi, figure out what you want to do. The good thing is that you'll have all summer to reach out and network as you think about what you want to target for in January. Also, start reading any interview prep materials now; you don't have to memorize it, but having that exposure is a good thing.
Calm down, man. You are fine. When you are not working this summer, do some networking. Those schools that you listed have plenty of alumni. Try to maybe get a fall internship in something related, such as PWM, accounting, boutique IB (find some in your area and cold email them). And, as you said you would, get more involved in finance-related organizations. For SA recruiting, all you really need an internship for is to prove that you are committed to and interested in finance.
