Non-Alumni Networking
I go to a target school and have a SA IBD internship, but am considering applying to other places for full time positions. During the SA recruitment process, I was told to focus my networking efforts on alumni. I am not so familiar with the FT process, and I was wondering if it makes a difference if you network with alumni in terms of the process, or if it is merely recommended to network with alumni because alumni like to help out students from their school. I ask this because I realized there are a few people I know through an organization I am involved with that I could reach out to, but are not alumni of the school I go to.

The reason why alumni like to help out is because they feel the need to give back to their school and it makes them feel better about themselves.
I am sure the same would apply for the organization that you're involved in.
There is no harm in reaching out, I would just do it. Worse come to worse is them saying no.
So for the process it is not that only alumni can recommend people from their school for a position but that anyone can recommend anyone, just that it tends to be alumni doing the recommending? Is that correct?
And when you apply for FT, do you apply into the overall IBD division or do you apply for a specific group?
Generally, it doesn't need to be alumni but that is the most common.
In regards to FT recruiting, I believe you generally apply for the overall IBD division and they'll place you in specific groups afterwards. You only tend to apply to specific groups during experienced-hire recruiting.
Although I'm only working as a SA right now, I actually got this job through networking through a non-alumni. My understanding is that it's definitely easier for an alumni to respond to your cold-emails/calls, but where you go to school goes out the door in conversations.
Thanks a lot for all the advice. Also, if I am sending my resume out to other places but have not yet started my summer internship yet, what do I put as bullets under the position?
I would just leave it blank now, and in regards to the date, indicate that it is a future work experience. note: June 23rd to August 10th or something in that nature.
I'm just curious to hear what you have to say on this point.
In the event there is no deal flow in the summer, what would you put on your resume?

Whats the deal with calling non-alumni with questions? I did a PWM internship at a BB and have email addresses for a bunch of IBD and S&T people at the BB. That's valuable as shit imo but if I'm not at work then I have to email them from a personal email. I only intern MWF and would like to speak to people tomorrow of possible...
Did you ever try to reach out to them during your intern stint?
Only to capital markets and HR. I still intern MWF but want to speak to someone tomorrow, but won't be going in so I cant email from my MS email
^They don't give you email access away from the office? Rough. Anyways, just email them from your personal, and say in the email that you are currently interning at MS.
All BBs dont unless you have a laptop from the BB for remote or a blackberry. Its compliance rules. Not allowed on personal devices.
Lucky. My BB PWM office was only PWM, no other divisions.

I go to a target school and we have enough alumni at firms that first round interviews are usually solely handled by these alumni (and even getting picked for the interviews is handled by these alumni). Knowing this to be the case, is there any use for me to network with non-alumni at these firms? Will networking with these other analysts help me get a first round interview and pass the first round interview?
I obviously know that talking with other analysts will have an impact, but if doesn't have a sizable impact (like when I talk to one of the ten second year alumni at a firm), then it might not be worth my time with all this other shit I have to do for recruiting.
I would exhaust your alumni list before reaching out to non-alumni

I talked to a few people about this when I was networking. They said if your school has an alumni presence (like mine does at most banks) don't bother with non-alumni till you exhaust all your alumni connections
I'd say get creative. There's a helluva lot of things you can have in common with people other than school name, and if you know how to hack your LinkedIN searches they're quite findeable.
