Non-Stem Internationals in IB

Sort of serious question here guys. I’m an incoming 2025 summer analyst at a good global firm in NYC. I’m not a stem major so I don’t get the 3 years of CPT. I have the 1 year OPT. What’s generally the plan for students in my position? Would love to hear from others who know how to navigate extension of career or have been in this position before.

I’m definitely not the only one in such a position. Not necessarily worried but would love to hear what you guys have to say.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points and advice for non-STEM international students in your position:

  1. Ask Recruiters About Visa Policies:

    • It's crucial to ask recruiters about their visa policies early in the process. Specifically, inquire if they accept students on OPT/CPT and if they sponsor H-1B visas for full-time analysts. This will save you time and energy in networking and interviewing.
  2. Timing of Disclosure:

    • Disclose your visa status as early as possible. "Tricking" a bank into giving you an offer without disclosing your status can lead to rescinded offers once they find out.
  3. Navigating the Process:

    • Since you only have the 1-year OPT, you need to plan strategically. Some banks may not sponsor H-1B visas, so identifying those that do is essential.
    • Networking with international students who have successfully navigated this process can provide valuable insights and strategies.
  4. Crowd-Sourced Information:

    • Be cautious with crowd-sourced information as it can be outdated or inaccurate. Policies change year-to-year, so always verify with the recruiter.
  5. General Advice:

    • Stay informed about the latest visa policies and changes.
    • Consider seeking advice from immigration attorneys or university career services that specialize in international student employment.

If your firm does have a good solid presence like you mentioned, I’ve seen instances where people get sent to another office in Europe / SE Asia for a couple years and then can transfer back to the US on an L1 visa. Again, would be dependent on availabilities in other locations but it does provide you with a bit of a plan B
