Non-Target International Student Recruiting - USA

Hi Everyone,I'm currently an international sophomore at a non-target Big 10 university. I started using WSO a while ago and found it pretty useful and interesting. I am currently recruiting for SA 2022 internships and was hoping to find other international students who have placed well into IB in the past for some tips and learn about how they had approached recruiting during their time. Thanks in advance to everyone for contributing to the discussion!

1. Biggest tip is to make friends with white people and go to parties with them. The internationals that struggle the most (i.e. great resume, network a ton, land interviews but no offers) work hard but are very formal and reserved in professional settings. American professional settings, especially in advisory roles, tend to be very casual and nonhierarchical, and they look for this in interviews. This becomes doubly important when you go to big ten non-target where all your finance alums are frat bros, who will think you are weird if you talk super formally on a networking call. When you don't see blacking out on a Wednesday as stupid anymore, you will probably do fine in interviews.

2. Don't do internship back home unless you are from Canada or Mexico and the time zones align, or if you have no other internships lined up. Sucks to wake up at 3am for networking calls.

3. Don't rely on WSO or older students on which firms sponsor, that list changes every year. Network assuming all firms sponsor - I've seen more than a few firms take candidates they like even though internationals get an auto-reject from the application portal.

4. Regular networking tips for Americans still apply.
