Not a single interview yet - Resume?
Hi guys,
So SA OCR at my school has been well underway but I have yet to land an interview at any of the BBs, even after going to info sessions and having decent conversations on the phone with multiple people at most of them. A friend of mine recently found a sizable bullet alignment error for one of leadership entries on the resume that I submitted to all of them, so that might have been it, but I still get the feeling that I'm doing something wrong. I know that I just need to keep on grinding and avoid getting discouraged, but I'd love to get more opinions on my resume to see if there are any other glaring red flags I'm not noticing/input on what positive or negative impressions my resume is giving. Thanks!
I'm not going to look at your resume yet because something stuck out to me before that. With your "decent conversations on the phone with multiple people at most of them" have you closed the deal, I.E. asked them to forward your resume to HR for an interview? If not they probably aren't going to just do it themselves, which means all the possible goodwill you have created with them is for nothing if they aren't the ones selecting people for interviews.
Don't be timid in asking someone to forward your resume to HR. I think this is the no. 1 mistake people make when networking. Everyone knows why you are talking to them, if you feel like a conversation went well with someone then reach out the next day or so in an email and ask them if they would be willing to push your resume to HR.
The general layout looks on point..didn't really read the bullet points though..One thing I can suggest to change, which in my opinion looks super weird, is to remove your address from the top left and right sides. Just place it under your name and contact. Play with font sizes if you don't have enough space, because the way you have the address right now looks very off.
Also another good rule of thumb when possible, is not to just describe what you did, but try to keep your bullet points very results-oriented instead of task oriented. If you can back your experience with numbers or specific accomplishments, instead of tasks or initiatives, that always helps. Also shorten the long bullets and keep it to the point--try for as little "fluff" as possible. Not saying that you fluffed certain parts of your resume, but its very obvious to those reading it when fluff is present
there is way too much fluff on your resume. you might be extremely talented but you're unable to demonstrate that with a few words.
I'd rewrite all the bullets and increase your font size. use an active voice to directly communicate results. case in point: did you seriously hide that forbes info in a bottom right corner? the least likely spot someone would read?
here's a thought experiment. what are the 3 big take aways you want your reader to have? Now write your resume to guarantee those 3 points get across.
pitchbook 101 brah
Could it be due to GPA? Otherwise, what you're doing sounds good, and I think the resume looks nice
For what it's worth I'd at least give you a phone interview. Some guys I know will ding a candidate for having so close to a 3.5 though. They think it shows someone who is only willing to do the bare minimum to check a box.
I am also in his shoes. How would you suggest someone like us to move on? Is there still any chance to get in a decent place for SA at this time?
Agree w/ other posters about rewriting the bullets. Also you forgot to change the last bit of your email address so we all know you go to Vandy.
Haha I mentioned where I went to school in a previous post so that's not much of a secret. Are there any particular bullets/job entries that are seem particularly fluffy? I'm assuming the first one.
There's a chance that your resume just does not stack up to the competition. If your school has OCR, there are undoubtedly other students gunning for IB. Some times, a 3.54 and some relevant experience is just not enough when others have much more. I do find it odd, though, since you said that you have networked. Networking+OCR=plenty of interviews 90% of the time. Did you have anyone push your resume?
I haven't looked at your resume, but I think it is important to note that there is some randomness with the OCR process. I'm not making any excuses for anyone, but it probably isn't best to get discouraged this early in the process (our OCR has just started). I got OCR interview with BB last week while not getting phone interview with a O&G company that I envisioned as my "backup".
