NYC IB and Gym

Hey everyone,

I’m an incoming first year at a solid MM shop in NYC. I’m also a collegiate athlete and would love to stay in solid shape. Any advice on gym schedules/ how the analysts make it work? I want to do the best work possible and that’s the priority but I also want to remain in great shape (if it’s even possible). Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I interned this summer and saw some FT analysts/ associates hitting the gym from 6:30-7:30, taking a shower at the gym and heading to work immediately after. Full-body routines work the best, since you’ll be training ~3 days a week ideally.

The gameplan is to pack everything (gym clothes, pwo, protein) the night before, commute to the nearest gym (Midtown East Crunch is surprisingly nice/ they provide free hangers), change to gym clothes, hang the work clothes, workout, and take a shower at the gym. After you’re done working out, fill your pre-packed protein shake with the free cold brew in the office.

You'll be able to find some time to hit the gym most weeks. Feel it out in your first few weeks in your group. Some groups are okay with you taking 45-60 minutes around dinner, some groups everyone goes at 8am and rolls in at 9:30 or later. If you can find an apartment with a gym in building it's very nice for WFH days too.

Watch what you eat and try to preserve your sleep as much as possible would be my advice. Yeah you don't have much control over your schedule, but don't live 2 subway transfers away from work (eats up an extra 30 min in the morning) or stay up extra late watching Netflix if you get off early.

Anyone who says you don’t have time for the gym is an idiot. Some on my team go before work, some in the evenings. Totally doable to get a minimum 4 training days in a week. 2 weekdays, Saturday, Sunday. If you want it, you’ll make it happen.

Think most people on here just want to “workout” or “exercise” and aren’t really into it seriously

Honestly there are some groups where it is quite literally impossible to work out often. In PE I can go 5x a week, in my sweatshop banking group I went 1x a month and was averaging 4-5 hours of sleep a night.
