Passed CISI UK Financial Regulation first time — here's what actually worked

Saw a few threads on here asking about the CISI regulation paper so thought I'd share what worked for me since I sat it earlier this year.

The workbook is basically unreadable as a study tool. Dense, poorly structured, and the way it's written doesn't reflect how the exam actually tests you. I'd read a chapter and feel like I'd learned nothing useful.

What actually moved the needle was volume of practice questions with proper explanations — not just the answer, but why the other options are wrong. That's how the material starts to stick, especially for the COBS/CASS section which catches a lot of people off guard with how heavily it's weighted.

Couldn't find a resource that did this well so I built one. MockSmith — 1,000+ questions across all four sections, full explanations, £29.99 one-time its at mock-smith .com. Used it myself, now it's live for anyone else going through the same thing.

Happy to answer questions about the exam if anyone's got their sitting coming up

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key takeaways for preparing for the CISI UK Financial Regulation exam:

  1. Avoid Over-Reliance on the Workbook: Many candidates find the official workbook dense and not reflective of the actual exam format. It may not be the most effective primary study tool.

  2. Focus on Practice Questions: The most impactful strategy is working through a high volume of practice questions. Ensure these come with detailed explanations, not just the correct answers but also why other options are incorrect. This approach is particularly useful for sections like COBS (Conduct of Business Sourcebook) and CASS (Client Assets Sourcebook), which are heavily weighted and can be tricky.

  3. MockSmith Resource: A resource like MockSmith, offering over 1,000 questions with full explanations, could be a valuable tool. It’s designed to help candidates understand the material in a way that aligns with the exam's testing style.

  4. Exam-Specific Tips: Pay extra attention to the COBS/CASS sections, as they often catch candidates off guard. Familiarity with these areas can significantly improve your performance.

If you're preparing for the exam, prioritize practice and understanding over rote reading of the workbook.

Taking my regulation exam next week. I made notes on all the Fitch material and have worked through all 5 chapters of practice questions at least once. My scores have definitely improved on doing the questions multiple times, but that might just be a function of memorisation.

Would you say the actual exam’s questions were highly similar to all the practice qns + mocks?

I plan to do all 6 mocks + final questions once or twice over the weekend.

Good timing on the weekend drill — that's exactly the right approach before a sitting.

On the memorisation concern, you're right to flag it. The real exam won't repeat questions verbatim but it will test the same concepts — the difference is the wording will be less familiar and the wrong options will be more plausible. If your scores are improving because you genuinely understand why answers are right or wrong rather than just recognising them, you'll be fine. If you're pattern-matching to remembered answers, the exam will expose that.

The actual questions are similar in topic coverage but deliberately different in phrasing — that's the point of the format. COBS/CASS will be your heaviest section, roughly half the paper, so make sure that's solid going into the weekend.

Good luck — the exam is very passable with the prep you've done.
