Perception on LBS for IB SA/FT recruiting?
Background: Graduating this year from UK semi target (Maths & Finance) with roughly a low 2:1. First-gen student
Have summer intern experiences between FIG M&A, DCM, Private Credit, and also quantitative trading - recieved return offers between 2/4 of those (however not satisfied with them/not the route I want to go down).
The problem: Despite the experience, I struck out on any IB offers I actually wanted - SA and FT. I think it’s a combination of school brand amongst other things working against me regardless of what’s on the CV.
Where I’m at: Got into LBS MFA with a 50% scholarship. Admissions told me my experience profile was above average for the cohort. The sell feels obvious - brand reset, proper target school access, strong alumni, etc.
My question is pretty simple: for those who’ve recruited from masters programs into IB SA or FT in the UK, how do banks actually perceive it? Is it a door-opener for BB/EB (basically the elite banks) if you came from a semi or non-target undergrad? Networked with a bunch of alumni, and of course admissions, they’ve told me recruiting is great if you’re actually committed, but wanted to hear the truth from the WSO community without the sugar coating.
Any honest takes appreciated, especially from people who went through UK IB recruiting or are on the recruiting side.
I have also been accepted into LSE MSc Accounting, Organisations and Institutions, so interested in hearing how that compares?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the LBS MFA is highly regarded for IB recruiting in the UK, especially for candidates coming from semi-target or non-target undergraduate backgrounds. Here's what you need to know:
Brand Reset and Target School Access: LBS is considered a top-tier institution in the UK and globally. For IB recruiting, it provides a significant brand boost, especially for candidates from semi-target schools. The MFA program is well-recognized by BBs and EBs, and being part of the LBS network gives you access to strong alumni connections and on-campus recruiting opportunities.
Recruiting Outcomes: Alumni and admissions are correct in stating that the program opens doors to elite banks. Many students from the MFA program successfully secure roles in BBs, EBs, and top MMs. However, success heavily depends on your commitment to networking, preparation, and leveraging the resources available at LBS.
Perception of the MFA: Banks view the MFA as a rigorous program that attracts high-caliber candidates. Your prior experience in FIG M&A, DCM, Private Credit, and quantitative trading, combined with the LBS brand, positions you well for IB roles. The 50% scholarship and above-average profile for the cohort further validate your potential.
Networking and Alumni Support: Networking is critical. LBS has a strong alumni base in IB, and many alumni are willing to help current students. Reaching out to alumni, attending events, and building relationships will be key to securing interviews and offers.
Challenges: While the LBS MFA is a strong platform, it doesn't guarantee success. The competition is intense, and you'll need to excel in applications, interviews, and assessments. Additionally, your low 2:1 might still be a slight hurdle, but the LBS brand and your work experience should help mitigate this.
In summary, the LBS MFA is a strong door-opener for IB SA and FT roles in the UK, particularly for BBs and EBs. With your background and the resources at LBS, you have a solid chance to break into the roles you want, provided you put in the effort to network and prepare effectively.

Do they not care about grades? What was your gmat?
Hi,
I scored a 335/340 on my GRE (170q, 165v), alongside that they took into consideration the multiple internship experience I have (which they put a preference for), AND I had a personal reference from the HF I worked at by the PM I worked under (he also did an MBA at LBS) :) Hope this helps
They also explained that for stem majors there is some leighway, as I did a very hard program, and also have passed my CFA L1
Makes sense - I have good experience also but was told having a low 2:1 is a no go lmao
Not quite sure what to say, did you have a good gre/GMAT?
Did you speak to previous alumni? Interview good? Relevant degree?
To my understanding they also care about extra curricular, and involvement in clubs
Ah I meant I was told by randos on here
I am yet to apply but have very good work exp
Need to take the gmat but should be alr
The average GRE score is 310 from what adcoms told me, so as long as you score that equivalent in GMAT or higher you should be good. I also believe final offers are bein sent out 2nd week of June, so if you want 26 admit should hurry!
