Philosophy and economics for investment banking
Hi everyone, I am a current Year 13 who has recently sent off their application to study Philosophy and Economics with my choices being LSE, Bristol, St Andrews, Manchester and Southampton.
However I have been feeling rather unconfident in my chances of actually getting into LSE as of late and was wondering whether you think its still possible to break into IB with a Philosophy and Economics degree from Bristol.
Would appreciate your thoughts on this and thanks in advance.
Edit: Would also appreciate any thoughts on Bristol vs St Andrews for IB
Breaking into investment banking with a Philosophy and Economics degree from Bristol is definitely possible, though it may require more effort compared to graduates from top-tier target schools like LSE, Oxford, or Cambridge. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider:
University Prestige and Target Schools:
While Bristol is a respected university, it is generally considered a "semi-target" for investment banking. This means that while it may not have the same level of recruitment activity as LSE or Oxbridge, it still offers opportunities if you stand out.
Differentiating Yourself:
To compensate for not being at a top-tier target school, focus on building a strong profile:
Philosophy and Economics Degree:
Your degree choice is not a dealbreaker. Many successful bankers come from diverse academic backgrounds, including non-finance fields like Philosophy. What matters is your ability to demonstrate analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a genuine interest in finance.
Spring Weeks and Internships:
Apply for spring weeks and summer internships at investment banks. These are critical for gaining experience and securing a full-time role later. Even if you face challenges initially, persistence and a strong application can open doors.
Networking and Applications:
Leverage Bristol's alumni network and attend industry events. Additionally, apply broadly to banks, including smaller firms and boutique investment banks, to increase your chances.
In summary, while breaking into IB from Bristol may require more effort compared to LSE, it is absolutely achievable with the right strategy, strong academics, relevant experience, and effective networking.
