Pivoting into IB feels impossible, what are some alternative routes?

Hey all,

As of last year, I've been pursuing an MBA at a semi-target west coast Canadian university (I've lived in Canada and wish to stay here) to pivot from my 4 year tenure in Hollywood post-production. Additionally I've been a part of the endowment fund ($34M CAD in AUM) to get some equity research experience.

Anyway, on top of that, after being equipped with the WSO Academy preparations, I've been networking with over 50 coffee chats under my belt.

The common consensus from all those chats is that I need experience to get entry level roles. I'm considering audit or general accounting and client-facing commercial banking roles to later make a pivot into investment banking. What are some other avenues to increase my chances of getting a break to prove myself?

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing your responses.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some alternative routes and strategies to increase your chances of breaking into investment banking (IB):

1. Corporate Finance Roles

  • Positions in FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) or Strategic Finance at startups or established companies can provide valuable financial modeling and analytical experience. These roles often overlap with skills required in IB and can serve as a stepping stone.

2. Big Four Transaction Services or Valuation

  • Joining a Big Four firm in their Transaction Services or Valuation Services teams is a common path. These roles involve M&A advisory, due diligence, and valuation work, which are highly transferable to IB.

3. Boutique or Middle-Market Banks

  • Target boutique or middle-market (MM) investment banks. These firms often have less rigid hiring processes compared to bulge brackets and may value your unique background and networking efforts.

4. Commercial Banking

  • As you mentioned, client-facing commercial banking roles can be a viable option. Focus on roles that involve credit analysis or lending to corporate clients, as these skills align well with IB.

5. Private Equity or Venture Capital

  • While more challenging to break into directly, junior roles in private equity (PE) or venture capital (VC) firms can provide exposure to deal-making and financial analysis. This experience can later be leveraged for IB roles.

6. MBA Networking and Alumni Outreach

  • Continue leveraging your MBA network. Focus on alumni who transitioned into IB from non-traditional backgrounds. They can provide tailored advice and potentially refer you for roles.

7. Endowment Fund Experience

  • Highlight your work with the endowment fund. Emphasize your equity research experience and ability to analyze investments. This can be a strong talking point during interviews.

8. Lateral Entry via Industry Expertise

  • Consider roles in corporate development or strategy within industries you’re familiar with (e.g., media/entertainment). This can position you as an industry expert, making you attractive to IB groups focused on that sector.

9. Graduate School Internships

  • Pursue internships during your MBA, even if unpaid or part-time. These can provide direct IB experience and strengthen your resume.

10. GMAT and Top MBA Programs

  • If you’re open to further education, consider retaking the GMAT and applying to a T15 MBA program. These programs often have stronger IB pipelines and can significantly boost your chances.

Key Takeaways:

  • Networking remains critical. Keep building relationships, especially with Directors and MDs who can advocate for you.
  • Focus on roles that build transferable skills like financial modeling, valuation, and deal experience.
  • Be persistent and open to lateral moves. Many professionals break into IB through unconventional paths.

Good luck! With your proactive approach and diverse experience, you’re already on the right track. Keep pushing forward!
