Portage Point Partners Investment Banking

This is my insights as a former senior IB employee of the firm for multiple years

Take this as a stern warning, be very careful when interviewing for their investment banking practice

They do a good job at selling you the platform and the quarterly bonus compensation model however what they don't tell you is you are taking a big haircut to the market in terms of your base pay; see rates below at each level

VP: $200k

SVP: $225k

Director: $250k

MD: $275k

Even though you have a quarterly bonus model, you must first earn your base salary in fees and anything above that is considered a "bonus"

Once you hit Director or MD, you must close deals otherwise you will not be paid a bonus. I have heard this has happened to VPs as well.

They also do not have dedicated juniors so you are either using a dedicated India team or pulling cross functional associates who all bill hourly and eat into the fee that's generated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the key insights regarding Portage Point Partners' Investment Banking practice:

  1. Base Pay Structure:

    • The base salaries at Portage Point Partners are notably below market rates:
      • VP: $200k
      • SVP: $225k
      • Director: $250k
      • MD: $275k
  2. Quarterly Bonus Model:

    • While the firm promotes its quarterly bonus compensation model, there’s a significant caveat:
      • You must first generate fees equivalent to your base salary before qualifying for any bonus.
      • For Directors and MDs, bonuses are contingent on closing deals, and there are reports of VPs facing similar conditions.
  3. Operational Challenges:

    • The firm lacks dedicated junior staff:
      • Instead, they rely on a dedicated India team or cross-functional associates who bill hourly.
      • This billing structure can reduce the net fees generated, impacting overall compensation.
  4. Cautionary Note:

Weird pattern I see on Linkedin is that folks that lateraled there came from top firms JPM, Alpine, Citi, etc. What’s up with that?

They do a great job at selling the platform
