Prep for IB Internship

I know forums for this already exist and I know that brushing up on Excel/PowerPoint is the best way to prep. I got the WSP Excel/PP courses which I plan on starting very soon, but have another question. I am interning at a boutique and found previous interns resumes on LinkedIn and all of the descriptions said "... use CapIQ to send out weekly market/industry trends" and "...managed research platforms such as CapIQ...." . Want advice on how to best prepare for putting these "weekly market/industry trends" together. In particular, I am looking for advice on what these market/industry trends look like. Are they more one-pagers broken out into a couple sections or more extensive. Would appreciate if someone could give me guidance on content/format so that I can prepare.

To prepare for creating "weekly market/industry trends" reports during your IB internship, here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Content Focus:

    • These reports typically highlight key developments in the market or industry relevant to your firm's focus. For example:
      • Major M&A deals or transactions in the industry.
      • Key financial metrics or trends (e.g., revenue growth, EBITDA multiples).
      • Notable news or regulatory changes impacting the sector.
    • Include concise summaries of the most critical updates, supported by data or charts.
  2. Format:

    • One-Pagers: These are often preferred for quick consumption. They are broken into sections such as:
      • Market Overview: A snapshot of the overall market performance (e.g., S&P 500, sector indices).
      • Industry Highlights: Key news or trends specific to the industry.
      • Deal Activity: Summary of recent transactions, IPOs, or funding rounds.
      • Key Metrics: Charts or tables showing relevant financial data (e.g., valuation multiples, stock performance).
    • More Extensive Reports: If required, these might include deeper analysis, such as:
      • Detailed commentary on trends.
      • Comparative analysis of companies within the industry.
      • Projections or implications of recent developments.
  3. Preparation Tips:

    • CapIQ Familiarity: Learn how to pull data efficiently from CapIQ. Practice running comps, transaction searches, and generating charts or tables.
    • Templates: If your firm has existing templates, study them closely. If not, create a clean, professional template with consistent formatting.
    • Attention to Detail: Double-check all data and formatting. Ensure charts and tables are clear and visually appealing.
    • Stay Updated: Read daily business news (e.g., WSJ, FT) to stay informed about market and industry trends.
  4. Execution:

    • Start small by focusing on a few key sections and gradually expand as you gain confidence.
    • Use concise bullet points and avoid overloading with unnecessary details.
    • Be prepared to defend your data sources and insights if asked.

By mastering these elements, you'll be well-prepared to deliver polished and insightful market/industry trend reports during your internship.

Those type of reports are usually short and to the point—think a one-pager or a couple of slides summarizing key industry trends. They typically include:
• Market Performance – Stock movements, sector performance, credit spreads, etc.
• Recent Deals – M&A, IPOs, notable financings.
• Industry News – Big announcements, regulatory changes, earnings reports.
• Macro Trends – Interest rates, inflation, or anything impacting the sector.

CapIQ is mainly used to pull data on deals, comps, and market activity. Best way to prep? Get familiar with CapIQ, follow industry news (WSJ, Bloomberg), and try putting together a sample one-pager. If your firm has a set format, follow that—otherwise, keep it clean and concise.

Thank you! I am worried about my ability to do the CapIQ screens just because I have never used it before. I have been looking through my school who I thought would've provided it but cannot get access. Any advice on how to get around this?

Yeah, I get that. CapIQ can seem tricky if you haven’t used it before, but it’s not too bad once you get familiar with it. If your school doesn’t offer access, you could try reaching out to CapIQ for a student trial, check if your school has Bloomberg or FactSet, or even use free platforms like Koyfin. If you know anyone in finance, they might be able to walk you through it. Also, YouTube and LinkedIn Learning have solid tutorials. If you’re just trying to get comfortable with screening, practicing in Excel can help too. Let me know if you need anything!
