Public Finance Superday

Hi all, have a public finance superday coming up at a BB. Currently reviewing the Handbook of Municipal Bonds by Fabozzi, resources on EMMA, MuniOS, BondBuyer, and some primers and recent market updates. Is there anything else I should be looking at? What are the key types of questions to keep in mind? I would really appreciate any advice; I have about a week to prepare.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on for your Public Finance Superday preparation:

  1. Technical Knowledge:

    • Ensure you're comfortable with quantitative skills, as public finance often involves structuring municipal debt across the curve, solving for revenue constraints, and understanding issuers' desired debt service.
    • Be ready to discuss modeling and financial analysis, as these are key components of the role.
  2. Market Awareness:

    • Stay updated on recent municipal market trends, especially how governments are navigating financial challenges (e.g., post-COVID impacts). Resources like BondBuyer and EMMA are excellent for this.
    • Understand the basics of municipal debt, including general obligation bonds, revenue bonds, and other instruments.
  3. Behavioral Questions:

    • Be prepared to demonstrate teamwork and big-picture thinking. Public finance teams often work collaboratively, and junior resources are stretched thin at BB firms, so being a team player is critical.
    • Highlight your interest in public policy and how it aligns with your career goals, as this is a niche field that values genuine interest in government and finance.
  4. RFP and Presentation Skills:

    • Public finance involves responding to RFPs (Request for Proposals) due to government procurement rules. Brush up on your MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as they are essential for creating and presenting proposals.
  5. Potential Questions:

    • Expect questions on why you’re interested in public finance and how it aligns with your skills and interests.
    • Be ready for technical questions on municipal bond structures, credit analysis, and market dynamics.
    • Behavioral questions may focus on teamwork, problem-solving, and your ability to handle challenging situations.
  6. Additional Resources:

    • Dive deeper into primers on municipal bonds and credit analysis.
    • Review case studies or examples of municipal debt structuring to understand practical applications.

With a week to prepare, focus on balancing technical knowledge, market awareness, and behavioral readiness. Good luck!
