Question about Internships

Hi everyone,

I'm a rising sophomore (class of 2027) at Wharton trying to break into investment banking, but I'm an FGLI non-diversity student (male, Asian) so I don't really have any family who knows about recruiting/the industry in general. I would really appreciate some advice!

I don't know where to start with the following:

Where and when do students get sophomore summer internships? I've heard that BofA and MS sophomore IB sophomore programs are usually reserved for diversity students. Where should we start to look (websites, etc.)? When does recruiting for Summer 2025 sophomore spots start/end?

I did a search fund internship this summer — but it wasn't anything glamorous. Mostly cold-emailing, so I'm trying to find a remote internship position this upcoming fall as well. What kind of companies offer these positions?

Thank you guys so much! I didn't know who to ask, and it feels like everyone has everything figured out.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about securing sophomore summer internships in investment banking:

Where and When to Get Sophomore Summer Internships:

  1. Timing and Availability:

    • BBs (Bulge Bracket Banks): Most BBs like MS, GS, BofA, and RBC have already completed their recruiting for sophomore summer internships. Citi and UBS typically open their applications in the fall.
    • Boutique Shops: Since many BBs are done with their recruiting, it's advisable to start looking at smaller, boutique investment banks. These firms often have more flexible recruiting timelines and can provide valuable experience to strengthen your resume for junior summer internships.
  2. Recruiting Timeline for Junior Summer Internships:

    • RBC: Usually the first to kick off junior summer (SA 2025) recruiting in December.
    • BB Diversity Programs and Some EBs/MMs: Typically start recruiting in February-March.
    • BB Non-Diverse and Other EBs: Recruiting can extend into the summer.

Where to Look for Opportunities:

  1. Websites and Platforms:

    • Wall Street Oasis (WSO): A valuable resource for finding internship opportunities and networking advice.
    • Company Career Pages: Regularly check the career sections of investment banks and boutique firms.
    • LinkedIn: Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the industry and stay updated on job postings.
  2. Networking:

    • Alumni Networks: Reach out to Wharton alumni working in investment banking for advice and potential referrals.
    • Professional Events: Attend finance-related events and webinars to expand your network.

Remote Internship Positions:

  1. Types of Companies:

    • Search Funds: As you have experience with a search fund, consider looking for similar opportunities.
    • Boutique Investment Banks: Many smaller firms offer remote internships, especially in the current environment.
    • Startups and Financial Advisory Firms: These companies often have flexible internship programs that can be done remotely.
  2. Application Strategy:

    • Cold Emailing: Continue to use cold emailing to reach out to potential employers. Tailor your emails to highlight your skills and experiences.
    • Job Boards: Utilize job boards like Indeed, Glassdoor, and specialized finance job boards to find remote internship listings.

Additional Tips:

  • Resume and Interview Prep: Make sure your resume is polished and practice your interview skills. Consider using services like WSO Resume Review and WSO Mock Interviews.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on forums and discussions on WSO to stay updated on the latest recruiting trends and advice.

Remember, your junior year internship is the most critical, so use your sophomore year to build relevant experience and network effectively. Good luck!
